KC Superstar and others who have followed her are correct. Legally, Jesus would be "Jesus, son of Joseph." Even though Christians believe He is Son of God, when Joseph went ahead with the marriage (after reassurances from an angel per Matthew, Chapter 1), he became the legal father of Jesus, even if not His biological father. Consider also that Jesus' claim to be Son of David, which establishes him as the Jewish Messiah (Hebrew equivalent of Christ) comes through the lineage of Joseph, NOT through the lineage of Mary. (Read the genealogies in Matthew and Luke.)

He would NOT have been "Jesus ben Yosef" or any variation of that, since Joseph and Mary both claimed that he was not Joseph's son.
The best he could have done was "Jesus ben Mary", since the christian bible claims that mary was his mother and neither mary nor joseph dispute that.

Christ is hebrew which means "the anointed one." It symbolizes that he is a King and Lord. During this time era, I don't believe there were last names. People instead referred to where they lived to distinguish who was who. Jesus was often referred to as Jesus of Nazareth.

Jesus bar Joseph. Jesus the son of Joseph. This is the way they did it in Israel 2000 years ago. This is his earthly name. He is also know by the Son of God, Alpha and Omega, Creator, Almighty God, Lion of the tribe of Judah, Mighty King, I Am, Prince of Peace, Creator, Son of Man, Son of God and many other wonderful names all quite inadequate to properly describe Him.

Family names are a European thing. Where Jesus was from they used their name and the name of their father or where they're from. Jesus' actual name would have been something like "Yeshua ben Yosef" (Jesus son of Joseph).
