i noticed a lot of mormons using this phrase. it reminds me of a cult test
question #5 Cult-speak
The cult has its own language. The cult invents new terminology or euphemisms for many things. The cult may also redefine many common words or phrases to mean something different.
"Loaded Language" is one of Robert J. Lifton's Eight Conditions of Thought Reform -- an essential part of any effective brainwashing program. The cult-speak may include a bunch of well-worn slogans. The special words constrict rather than expand human understanding, and the slogans stop thought.
here are more phrases regarding loaded language:

'Loading the language" means that
"The group develops a jargon in many unique to itself.... This jargon consists of numerous words and phrases which the members understand (or think they understand), but which really act to dull one's ability to engage in critical thinking. It is actually made up of thought-terminating cliches.
The most far-reaching and complex of human problems are compressed into brief, definitive-sounding phrases, easily memorized and easily expressed. Thought-provoking complexities are bypassed and ultimate truth is expressed in a single phrase or even a word."
-- condensed from Dr. Lifton's writings
"it's a mormon thing" fits right into this.

Why are you calling the LDS church a cult? I live in Utah. All my neighbors are Mormon. That church has helped me with no strings attached, even though I do not attend church. Hardly the actions of a cult. Members have free-will, are not made to do anything unusual and treat their fellow man with compassion. They do not use scare tactics or bad-mouth other churches. I've been to plenty churches in my time, and I have to say the LDS have the most class. They are typically very family oriented, Jesus loving, God revering people. Seriously what is your definition of a cult?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormonism) is a beautiful Christian religion, not a cult. This very question has been in the news lately; several reporters have pointed out that even the Southern Baptist Convention (a very large evangelical organization in the United States) lists Mormonism under the category "newly developed religions," not "cults and sects." Additionally, a recent poll suggested that half of white evangelical Christians do believe that Mormonism is a Christian religion (not a cult).

So according to your definition, any kind of jargon is a sign of a cult. Legal jargon, Medical jargon, etc.
And I guess when a member of a specific race says something in conversation with people who are not of that race then says something like, for example, "it's a Black thing" - then they're members of a cult too, right?
Please! Get a grip. Oh, wait, is "get a grip" part of your "loaded language" too? ***rolls eyes***

Caffeine is a cultural, no longer non secular element. some do, some do no longer. you do no longer ought to repent of eating a coke. I enjoyed some Mt. Dew some hours in the past. indexed right here are the enormous "thou shalt no longer's" no coffee, tea, tobacco, smoking, eating alcohol, abusing drugs, premarital sexual touch, extramarital sexual touch, pornography, have interaction in gay habit, have interaction in polygamous relationships or marriages. and the "thou shalt's" Pay 10% tithing, pass to church, obey the guidelines different issues that are cautioned are: Modesty, relationship after the age of sixteen and in basic terms in communities for some years, no R-rated movies, men happening 2 365 days missions, donning bikinis, we could continuously pass to church frequently, and pass to the temple frequently. kin abode Evenings on Monday nights. you're able to do all or any of those issues in this checklist and nevertheless be an entire fledged member of the church in solid status, although, they are discouraged (or inspired because of the fact the case may well be). i'm specific I left some off, and we could make the checklist longer if we start up up nit choosing, yet that provides you a prevalent concept. Edit: The poster above states: "they think of that they are going to by no potential see their son back after dying if he marries you outdoors the temple" it is purely no longer real. whilst it quite is real that we've faith that front into what we could casually call the "real tier of the real tier" of heaven is reserved for 2 those that are married contained in the temple, any member of the church (...and everyone else for that count) can pass to the real tier of heaven (aka the celestial kingdom). We have faith that everyone born in the international (LDS or in any different case) can ultimately finally end up in any of the kingdoms of heaven.

Oh, Holy Hephalumps. "It's a Mormon thing" is probably the least jargonic phrase I've ever seen have its meaning twisted. I suppose "It's a guy thing" means that guys are a secretive, exclusive, discriminatory club not to be trusted by anyone who isn't a guy.
Okay, bad example.

Members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have never used the phrase "Its a Mormon Thing". I have been a member of the church for 64 years and have not heard that terminology in the church. I have heard it by the enemies of the church. Members of the Church do not call themselves Mormons. That is a terminology invented by the enemies of the church in 1830 and later. It is now somewhat accepted as "Mormon Tabernacle Choir". If you look in Websters it says a Cult is a group of people with Specific beliefs who follow those beliefs. Therefore Baptists are cults as well as all the thousand religions that exist.
One of the largest lies on earth, is that Mormons practice Polygamy. There is a group that call themselves Mormons or Fundamentalists. They are about 100,000 or less. The Churh I belong to has 13,000,000 members and not one of them paractice polygamy. If you were to vote for Mitt Romney, he has had only one wife. Guiliani has had three. Most of the Democrats and Republicans running has had more than one wife. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I suppose from this logic all mathematicians are cultist, and all IBM employees, and all government employees who use their numerous acronyms, and all football players who have their own jargon, and all....
Anyone who labels someone else a derogatory label, is in my humble opinion, being prejudice.

Wow what incredibly stupid logic.
I have been mormon my whole life and have never heard anyone say its a mormon thing.
I have also been a girl my entire life and heard girls say its a girl thing a lot of times to guys. I have said it myself. I guess all girls are in a "cult"
Sometimes you just have to have this response to a question and I think this is a perfect example of one of those times so here goes

So does the lexicon of every religion. The military also does this, as do many social organizations, such as Boy Scouts.

Ok, so just because Mormons do something that hardly no one non-lds does...that makes them a cult?
Do you know what fry sauce is? If you are a Mormon or live out west you do...
Do you know what "RM", "BP", or "seventies" means? You would if you were Mormon...
Black people have their own language(basically) so does that make them a cult? They say "oh, it's a black thing" too...
Online chatters take certain terms and change them to mean other things...like do you know what "I didn't mean to break your crayons" means?? You would if you were an avid IMer/chatter....
