I don't care if Christians feel all special and better than atheists, but why do they want to convert us so bad? They can do all the "good" things and go to Heaven but they try so bad to "prevent" us from Hell. Before they blame other people I think they should make themselves a better example. I don't think they should try to force it on us.

Atheists are the most untrusted minority in US(vote). 10% of ppl in US are atheists and 75% Christians. Only 0.2% of jail population are atheists. Christians have MUCH higher crime rates than Muslims or other religions, meaning most criminals are Christians. And yet JUST because we lack god in our lives we can't hold office in 11 states, blue laws exist, and atheist boys can't join Boy scouts. Christians try to control science educations and teach bibles instead in schools, Bush Senior says that he doesn't see why atheists should be considered citizens b/c USA is ONE NATION UNDER GOD.

We aren't bad people, and yet we get treated so unfairly

And atheists know that they can end up in hell if it existed it's just that they are choosing to risk it. You don't have to give us advice, Christians.

I'm not generalizing. Example? Jeffrey Dahmer. It's people who ARE Christians who end up in jail. It said so.

Christians, didn't you READ? I've listed all the unfair things atheists have to suffer.

2007-12-19 13:24:05 · update #3

You don't get my point, I'm saying we KNOW we can go to hell but we are risking anyway. You don't have to patronize us, okay? We are going hell, if we are, by our CHOICE!!!

DON'T YOU KNOW WHAT MY QUESTION IS? MY POINT HERE IS TO STOP MINDING OUR BUSINESS BECAUSE WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE DOING. OKAY, YOU'RE FORGIVEN. BUT THAT DOESNT' JUSTIFY CHRISTIANS GIVING US LESS RIGHTS AND TRYING TO STOP US LEARING SCIENCE. AND EVEN IF YOU ARE "FORGIVEN" YOU STILL ARE "SINFUL" SO MAKE YOURSELVES A GOOD EXAMPLE SO WE CAN BE PERSUADED BETTER OR SOMETHING. I SEE LOTS OF HYPOCRITES.

I am a Christian. I care about people. I would like them to know truth.

BUT before you stop reading -- I RESPECT your belief and have no intention of "preaching."

I would also like to say that I am not so arrogant to believe I CAN'T be wrong.

Anyone whoTRULY loves others -- and this is my BELIEF -- already knows the a good portion of "religious truth." And I am perfectly content to leave it there.

You wrote: "And yet JUST because we lack god in our lives we can't hold office in 11 states,

I am actually appalled! I did not know this. I commiserate. (And I wonder how this can be constitutional? Am I that ignorant?)

"blue laws exist,"

I know about "bule laws." Fortunately most jurisdictions only make fun of them.

"and atheist boys can't join Boy scouts."

When in 9th grade I became friends with a new kid who had moved near us from Hawaii. He wasn't Christian but this fact never made any difference to me -- we just became good friends. I was quite shocked when I found out he couldn't join the Boy Scouts since I was a member and wanted us to go to Summer Camp together. My parents could never understand when I then quit.

By the way -- being gay -- I was technically not allowed in the Boy Scouts either, but I never knew it at the time.

"Christians try to control science educations and teach bibles instead in schools,"

Only the fanatical (and ignorant) fundamentalist -- and many other Christians do NOT agree with them.

"Bush Senior says that he doesn't see why atheists should be considered citizens b/c USA is ONE NATION UNDER GOD."

How come all nations assume God is on their side? (That is if they believe in God). Even Hitler spoke about the "Christian Arian Nation" and appealed to christians to unite under his rule.

Could you please say where this quote can be found? I am very interested.
++++++++++++++++++++++
And DAVID 's

answer proves that he is the epitomy of ignorance, even about his own religion. But unfortunately there are too many people like him out there giving Christianity a bad name.
++++++++++++++++++++++

I would like to add my three favorite Bible quotes:

1) Paraphrased: "This is the law. That you love God. . .And love your neighbor as yourself."

2) God is love and he who abides in love abides in God and God in him."

3) By their works you shall know them."

Nothing there about mouthing the words: "I accept Jesus as my personal savior." Whether you "believe" in God or not, you have accepted Him as your savior by the love you give others..
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
And Ragriev:

you wrote "Your statistics about jail is faulty. A minority of people in the US are atheists, and so it is obvious that a minority of people in US jails are atheists "

First: His STATISTICS may very well be correct. And if they are he proves his point. If 10% of the country areatheist than one would expect 10% if prison inmates to be atheist by statistics alone.

However the rest of your answer I think makes a valid point.

I shall use what the bible wrote to counter these christians...

Jesus said, "Let them be. Blind guides is what they are. If, then, a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit."Mat. 15:14

and what are blind guides? they are information that those not tell a 100% authentic story...
the line between the two is even greater the the longest river on earth, what ever it is called.
so why make up the difference when your God doesnt appears before us, when all we ask is for you to show us your God, and yet you present us with Opinions rather than facts...
American Atheists loves America just as much as anyone of your'e and yet such critism is done...
is your next target other religions?
or are we targeted coz we own your asses with science?

"We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart."
-- H. L. Mencken

"Men never commit evil so fully and joyfuly as when they do it for religious convictions"
-- Blaise Pascal

"The church says the earth is flat, but I know that it is round, for I have seen the shadow on the moon, and I have more faith in a shadow than in the church."
--Ferdinand Magellan

"Gods are fragile things; they may be killed by a whiff of science or a dose of common sense."

Where to begin to answer your question....

First of all, when you consider the total prison population, realize that if only 10% of the people in the U.S. are atheists doesn't it stand to reason that there would be a smaller group of people in prison, primarily because in a smaller group, there is less deviation from certain standards.

Also, remember that in those statistics about 75% of the people being Christians, they often will identify themselves as "Christian" because that is the religion they most closely affiliate with. Many "Christians" are Christian in name only. Meaning they may believe in the existence of God, but not believe in any type of a relationship with God.

Why those 11 states don't allow atheists to hold offices or be part of the Boy scouts, I have no clue. As a Girl Scout leader, I can tell you that the Girl Scouts does not have the same viewpoint (we cannot even sing Christmas carols with any religious significance and had to get the permission of the parents to use a church building for our meetings).

As far as christians controlling science educations and teaching Bible in the schools, I know of no public school that will allow the Bible to be taught. In fact, it's illegal in most states.

And as far as what Bush Sr states, he's been out of office for a long time...

And I do agree, most atheists are pretty decent people, but I think that the unfair treatment is a matter of perspective. The Christian bashing that I constantly see makes me feel the same way about how CHristians are treated by many of the atheists on this forum.

Can I just say something. Your statistics about jail is faulty. A minority of people in the US are atheists, and so it is obvious that a minority of people in US jails are atheists (Where did you get your statistics anyways). Did you get statistics on how many Christians are in jail? Plus, there might be less atheists and more Christians, or vice versa, in jail or real life, depending on your sources. Are your sources credible? What are they?. As for other Muslim countries, they can also have a lower crime rate becuase they have stricter punishments. You also fail to realize that most countries that embrace Christianity are third world, and therefore are liable to have more criminals. And some people "discover" religion while in jail, which probably skews teh results a bit

I am a Christian.I think you have the logic behind Christianity all wrong. To be a Christian is to believe that you are forgive no matter your sins from the past, present or future.A Christian sins.. Which means you will find discourage from ones whom claim to be a christian and you see them as a hypocrite. based on the life style they might live. The only reason we try to get you to believe in Jesus isn't to belittle you or tell you straight up your going to hell.. A christian is supposed to tell you how beautiful the a relationship with jesus is. YOU DON"T GO LOOKING INTO A CHRISTIANS LIFE SEEING WHAT THERE SINS ARE...TO SEEK A " GOOD EXAMPLE" A CHRISTIAN IS MERLY A HUMAN BEING .. A SINNER, SPENDING THERE DAYS TRYING IN THERE HEARTS!!!! TO BE CHRIST LIKE!..... Not to judged.I don't personally care what my neigbor does, yet i care if she or he knows jesus forgives and that if they just took a moment to realize that no matter what sin you commit you are still able to receive forgivness ...

ABC's Of Becoming a Christian;

A - admit you are a sinner

B - believe that Jesus is God's Son.

C - confess that if you died today that you are forgive and will be with him in heaven for all enternity.

God bless and even though you posted your question 6 years ago, i do hope your heart has or will be changed. i don't know you but i will pray for you.

You make some wonderful points.
An atheist could never be elected in the United States. When we trot our troops around the world to spread our democracy and freedom, it is difficult to be an atheist in the US and our rights of free thought are stifled.
I do not agree with you on the number of atheists in the US, I am sure that there are many more.
It is interesting that you cite research on religion in prison. It is useful as a way to manipulate the legal system. For example, one of the kids for whom I was a surrogate parent came to an Individual Education Plan meeting at school with his father. Daddy's complaint is that he didn't want his son to have consequences for school misconduct. Daddy wore a hat to the meeting that said, "Your must have me confused with someone who gives a damn". On his hat, at a school meeting for his kid. Well, the kid is now on death row but during the news coverage of the trial, Daddy had gotten religion. Cute. That's the One Nation Under God.
A final piece. Sex offenders used to regularly claim that they had been molested as children. They hooked up lie detectors to a bunch of them and the percentage dropped dramatically. Just more manipulative criminal crap.
By their works you will know them.

Well there are alot of christians who are very stong in their faith. They believe that they are right in every aspect of life, but that is not always true. The first point is that GOOD THINGS DO NOT GET YOU INTO HEAVEN. THE ONLY WAY TO GET TO HEAVEN IS A RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS. We belive that it is our duty as christians to convert people who are not. We want to convert you so that you will know how amazing Gods love is. And trust me I have doubted and was an atheist of sorts for a while but when I returned to Christ I felt like a gap was filled. We just want to share that joy with you. We can't help doing it and it will never stop.

Do you love anyone or anything?? because if there is no God, there is no such thing as real love. There are only biological drives. And there is no morality because there is no reason for it. If you have morals I am not sure where they come from because you need none. Every desire is biological and we should give in. Have sex with everyone, kill whoever you want, becasue it doesn't matter. Animals do it so why not us? that is just a way of life, it the natural order of things, its evolution, its a natural instinct and nothing else. give in. all we are is matter and energy. a big joke. we don' t need morals but everyone has them. Why? I can't tell you. Everyone has a conscious. why? It was my duty to tell you that. Don't change because of me or even think twice about it but change because God loves you reguardless of what you do.You don't have to agree with everything but all he wants is a personal relationship nothing more.

STOP SAYING YOU ARE SUFFERING YOU ARE NOT. SUFFERING IS BEING NAILED TO A CROSS AND DYING OF SUFFICAITON FOR SOMEONE THAT YOU DONT KNOW AND FOR SOMETHING YOU DID NOT DO, AND THEN FORGIVING THE PEOPLE WHO KILLED YOU. THAT IS SUFFERING SIR.

We don't feel "better" than you. We are all sinners, and fall short of the glory of God, and that's the very reason we need Jesus Christ. We are ALL in need of a Savior. He paid for all sin, for all time, for all people, even the ones who don't believe in Him.
We have the love of Christ in our hearts, and that's why we care about you. We don't wish for you to perish, just like our Father in Heaven doesn't wish for you to perish. He wants you to have eternal life with Him. So, you think this life is all there is? And your purpose in this life? I mean besides having babies, and taking care of the earth. then what? You just die, and rot? You say you are the minority, and that is true. why do you think so many people have the desire to worship something or someone? Don't you think that must have been implanted in us from the very beginning? Of course it was. It is our very purpose for being. He created us to worship HIM, because He alone is Holy and Worthy of our worship. If you say you don't worship anything, then you are wrong. Everybody worships SOMETHING. Some people worship God. Some people worship satan. Some people worship money. Some people worship other people. Some people worship their job. Some people worship sports. Some people worship drugs. And some people worship themselves. Those who don't worship God, put SOMETHING in place of Him, and worship it, including atheists. So, you do worship something. Why is that? there is a great desire to worship, and Our Father put it there, whether you worship Him or not, you are still worshipping because OF Him.
Christians have a higher crime rate than Muslims??? Where do you get your info? Isn't blowing yourself and others up a crime? I don't agree with that statement at all. Nevertheless, I'm not trying to force anything on you. I am just telling you what I know to be the truth, so you can understand who God is, and why He loves you. When you tell me there's no God, are you trying to force your beliefs on me that there is no God? It works both ways. God Bless (even though you don't think so)

the problem is,as my unitarian friend said to me,that christians focus too much on jesus as a god to be worshipped and not enough as a man with a philosophy to be followed.
it's hard to argue once i take in the history and general conduct of christianity.
jesus is,to me,humanity and he showed great compassion.the difficulty is that he's been hijacked by morons who want to push some sort of political point

This is why it's better to live in Canada. We can sit up here and have ourselves a good laugh. Up here we don't get treated like second-class citizens and no one bats an eye at religion, since most of us are of the belief that you're a person first.
