This link provides a short review of the top 10 types of countertops that are available today: http://design.hgtv.com/kitchen/SpecialFeatures_detail.aspx?id=21

Notice that one of the 10 is granite. The others are different types of natural stone and man-made surfaces. Granite is the most durable. And, it's also available in different price ranges, depending on the rarity of the particular type of stone. At minimum, you'll spend about $25 a square foot for the stone and an addiitonal $35 - $50 a square foot for fabrication (extra for bull-nose edges, sink cutouts, etc.).

The more exotic stones can get pretty expensive. For example, the second type shown on this page http://www.mondialgranite.com/new_arrivals.htm is called Blue Luisa and it runs $50 to $60 a square foot. It's also actually a quartz, which is more prone to cracking during fabrication and is not as durable as a granite countertop.

Do a web search on granite counter tops.
Also, check with Consumer Reports, they may have the info you need.
