Not at all. I think he had other troubling ideas that did not spawn from that book.

I read the hobbit at 9 years of age. It definitely increased my imagination and desire to read. I devoured the Lord of the Rings series, the Naria series, and many of the Shanara books before I was 12. I credit that early love of reading to my performance in school and obtaining my doctorate.

Read a book!!

That he committed suicide? Yes. The book had nothing to do with it though. In the grand scheme of things the Hobbit has very positive messages about believing in ones self and the destructiveness of war.

If people reading Tolkien were moved to commit suicide...then there would have been several million 'Death by Hobbit' cases by now, don't you think?

And there would have been no fans left to buy tickets to the film trilogy...

People commit suicide for a variety of reasons...although it's very sad and tragic, I would never blame any one thing in particular on it. A person has to be in despair, and seeing no way out to do this; merely reading a book would not cause a person to kill themselves.

The hobbit didn't cause the suicide. There had to be some underlying depression issues.

People committed suicide after Kurt Cobain killed himself. I remember when Freddie Prinze killed himself, a couple of distraught fans did likewise. Some have tried to tie a teenager's suicide to Ozzy Osbourne's song "Suicide Solution."

Why aren't you asking questions about them as well?

Sorry to hear that.
Suicide is always bad.

Are you sure that it was because of reading the book or just that he happened to be reading the book at the time he decided to end it.

Happy Questioning...

No. I dont think reading the book "The Hobbit" had anything to do with it. It is unfortunate that this boy did this to himself. That is so sad.

I'm sure his suicide wasn't related to that book. And if a book like that IS why he killed himself, he clearly wasn't cut out for this world anyways. Neither is a great book, and neither is scary or bad.
