I may be a "joker" at times here on YA, but this is one subject I am RABID about !!!!
The answers I have read thus far are right on the money about HSUS and their "leader", Wayne Pacelle.
They are the "cleaned up, publicly presentable" version of peta....They are MASTERS at stealing money from the uneducated public, and using those MILLIONS of dollars to lobby for legislation such as mandatory s/n, BSL, and other laws designed to END breeding entirely and eventually ALL animal ownership.
“The entire animal rights movement in the United States reacted with unfettered glee at the Ban in England ...We view this act of parliament as one of the most important actions in the history of the animal rights movement. This will energise our efforts to stop hunting with hounds.” Wayne Pacelle, CEO, Humane Society of the US (HSUS), London Times, December 26, 2004
"We are going to use the ballot box and the democratic process to stop all hunting in the United States ... We will take it species by species until all hunting is stopped in California. Then we will take it state by state. Wayne Pacelle, Senior VP Humane Society of the US (HSUS), formerly of Friends of Animals and Fund for Animals, Full Cry Magazine, October 1, 1990.
EDIT: PitbullM.....
That's a VERY valid question.....and one I will gladly answer!
The HSUS remains in business because the donating public is guided by their emotions when they hear the words "humane society"....they make no distinction between an "actual" one with "real" animals...and a name designed to generate $$$ for their lobbying dirty work.
The public is CLUELESS for the most part on the difference between "animal welfare" and "animal rights".....most of the public at large can't comprehend the concept of no more breeding and no more owning animals....It's MY personal mission to educate not only on responsible animal husbandry issues, but to EDUCATE on what these sleazes are REALLY about: ENDING BREEDING PERIOD AND EVENTUALLY ANIMAL OWNERSHIP!

Here's another scar;y thought for you. They (HSUS/PETA) would like to be in the position of being an animal protective agency, sort of like a child welfare agency. In this scenario, they would have to power to come and seize any animal that was being mistreated. And guess what, by their definition, owning an animal is abuse. So that would make everyone liable to having their animals seized. They also want to do away with the concept of ownership, and are trying to get people to talk about guardianship, which fits in with the animal protective bit.
If you want to read more, google up the petlaw site, the ADOA. There's a great discussion of HSUS on one of the rottweiler sites, google rottweiler HSUS and you'll probably find it.
Go to work for your local humane society in the knowledge they don't have anything with HSUS.

Ah yes, I see why you're confused about that...
That's very easy to clear up, the HSUS is a national animal rights group similar to PETA. Many years ago, they were an animal welfare organization like the ASPCA, but they got a new leader in the form of someone from another, now defunct, animal rights group. Now their focus is completely animal rights..
They do not, and have not for a long time, supported local animal shelters.. Back when they were an animal welfare organization, many places drew up their charters and laws in accordance with the HSUS, thus they were called humane societies..
Just to give you a clue of what HSUS is like, they tried to ban all reptiles just a few years ago.. That's a scary thing when you consider that many reptiles are even easier to keep healthy and happy then a dog or cat.. For instance, corn snakes are very easy to keep. They wanted every single one banned based on how badly the iguana is frequently treated by pet owners. So, they wanted to ban an entire group of pets because some pet owners of one species weren't that great..
Scary huh?

In other words, no, your local humane society is in no way affiliated with HSUS.. They probably did get their Animal Sheltering magazine in the past and may still get one now. They may have patterned some of their beliefs after them back when they were founded, but, that's probably about it..
I doubt any animal shelter would be affiliated with them now anyhow as most animal rights organizations don't spend money helping real dogs and cats..

The HSUS doesn't actually run any humane society at all. They just call themselves a humane society. They have no affiliation with local humane societies and rescues.
The HSUS is just like PETA in that its end-all goal is to eliminate pet ownership and stop the meat, fur, and research industries.
They misrepresent themselves as a society that helps homeless dogs and cats, when they don't do anything. They collected 20 MILLION for Katrina Animal Rescue and didn't put a cent of it towards helping Katrina animals. They also collected money to "help Michael Vick's dogs" but not a cent of that actually went to those dogs.

The humane society you worked for as nothing to do with the HSUS. In fact the HSUS dose not even give money to any humane society or shelter in this of any other country. The HSUS takes in millions and use it for furthering their political goals. Which includes finding ways to stop us from owning pets

They are a pet selling business, don't take in strays (at least in my city), and are very PETA-like in their views.
Correction: they are a business - not a shelter. They ask for $$ and get it but they don't need it. They are behind lots of attempts to pass bad pet related legislation. They are VERY bad.
Note: Ask your administration if they are connected in any way with them. They will say no. The Humane Society of (your city's name here) is likely what you are talking about. NOT the HSUS. People mistake them for being the same (Did you see my mistake?) There are many Humane Societies but they have no affiliation with the HSUS. If your HS takes in strays that is wonderful. Ours does not and only takes in family pets to sell them again, so that is why I volunteer for a different shelter. Sounds like you don't have anything to worry about with the one you are going to apply for a job with. Best wishes.

Wayne Pacelle, head of HSUS, has stated that he wants to do away with domestic animals (including pets).
“We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding ...One generation and out. We have no problems with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding.”
— Animal People News, May 1993
The HSUS does not own or operate a single shelter. They do not help animals, most of their money goes to legislative efforts to limit our ability to own and enjoy our animals.
They are currently under investigation for misuse of funds raised from the Katrina disaster.
They have raised a fortune in donations over the Michael Vick dogs, even though they are NOT caring for them.
While they are not as extreme in their public image as PeTA, they are, perhaps, even more dangerous because they *appear* to be respectable.

“I don’t have a hands-on fondness for animals…To this day I don’t feel bonded to any non-human animal. I like them and I pet them and I’m kind to them, but there’s no special bond between me and other animals.” Wayne Pacelle quoted in Bloodties: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted Kerasote, 1993, p. 251.
When asked if he envisioned a future without pets, “If I had my personal view, perhaps that might take hold. In fact, I don’t want to see another dog or cat born.” Wayne Pacelle quoted in Bloodties: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted Kerasote, 1993, p. 266.

The people who answered previously don't know what they are talking about. The HSUS is not a shelter as such. It's an animal protection organization. It is not PETA. They have done and do alot for animals. They are a fine, upstanding, trustwothy organization.
However, if you're looking to directly help homeless animals, Look at local shelters, humane societies, etc...

In addition to the other points, the HSUS falsely claimed that they were caring for the Michael Vick dogs, and were using that angle to drum up donations. That's plain and simple fraud.
