I want to get a PS3 because it is newer but I still have PS2 games that I want to keep and none of the PS3s play those games very well.

This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version. 40GB doesn't support SACD.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.

The PS3 does play certain PS2 games. The list is constantly getting bigger. The reason that it doesn't play ALL PS2 games right out of the box is because the PS2 software architecture is much different from that of the PS3. So they're always making updates and patches to make the PS2 games work. If you still have the PS2, stick with it for awhile. As cool as the PS3 and the Xbox 360 look, they both have defects and major problems that far outweigh their initial costs.

READ THIS IMPORTANT:
they already have made a ps3 that can play ps2 games. but there are only three kinds that will the 20gb (discontinued) the 60gb ( also Discontinued ) and the 80gb which is the same price as the 60gb. if you get the 40gb it will not be able to play ps2 games because they took out the backwards compatibility on that particular system. the best one to get would be the 80gb although it is $500 it comes with a game and sells for the same price as the 60gb (if you can still find one)

the 60gb plays more ps2 games than the 80gb though.

They play ps2 games and they even upscale them to HD quality. Not sure what you are implying...We have had the ps3 since luanch and we have played ALL of our ps2 and ps1 games without issue on the ps3. We played them on the ps3 when the playstation 3 was hooked up to 20 year old TVs and an 1080p HDTV and all the ps2 and ps1 games we played looked better on the ps3.

Well first of all, the 80gig model does play ps2 games while the 40 gig model does not. The 80 gig model, contrary to popular belief actually plays the vast majority of ps2 games, and without any major issues. It currently plays about 80-85% of the entire ps2 library (about 2000 titles) and with each firmware update sony releases, which are fairly frequent, more games get added to the list of titles. The Downside, is that it's the $500 model as opposed to $400 model that plays them.

My question is when are they going to get rolling with more games for it? What we need are some exclusives that rock...then the xbox fanboys will have to shut up...PS3 rocks...the best five bills I ever spent (except for bail that one time:)
