pride is a human failing, not an atheist ideal.

You have the wrong concept, at least where I am concerned. It's not a matter of pride, it's a matter of being true to myself and not creating self-deception by trying to follow a religion/deity in which I do not believe in. The word atheist alone does not define me any more than any other single word defines me - it is merely a small part of myself that makes up the whole and makes me the unique human being I am.

I'm not proud to be an atheist. That's like asking why am I proud to be an airbreathing mammal.

Being proud of being an atheist is like being proud of being right-handed, or of having 10 toes.
If you're atheist, you are atheist. That's it.

I don't really think about it as if it were something to be proud or ashamed of. It's simply something that's true of me, like the fact that I have long hair.

Pride suggests a sense of accomplishment that is not called for. However, comfort with being an atheist suggests an ease and peace of mind.
I will admit, however, to being a bit ashamed that it took me several years to face the lack of evidence that God exists. Emotional commitments to ideas resist reason's voice.

I'm neither proud nor ashamed. It's just who I am.

I am not. Most of the atheists here are mere kids, who advertise the fact that they don't know much. Some others may as well be.
