Strategic Air Command (1955)
.
"Jimmy" Stewart plays a United States Air Force Reserve officer recalled to active duty to fly B-36 and B-47 nuclear bombers for the Strategic Air Command. The film accurately portrays the duties and responsibilities of being an Air Force strategic bomber pilot, and the strains such service places on family life.
.
The movie shows the long retired huge B-36 and the all jet
B-47 bombers in extensive flight sequences. The personal story with June Allyson is a bore but the aerial shots make the movie worth it.

Anyone remember the movie (and the series) "12 O'Clock High"? Oh yes, and there's "The One That Got Away". Although not an aviation movie per se, it is the true story of Luftwaffe pilot von Werra, the only German pilot to escape from Britain (Canada actually) during the Second World War.
I think the series "Dogfights" (not actually a movie) on the History Channel is great! If you want to see some amazing flying (or a rendition thereof), look at the one in this series called "Long Odds". Dive bomber pilot "Swede" Vejtasa was involved in a dogfight (yes, that's right, a dogfight in a dive bomber) against 3 highly dangerous and maneuverable Japanese Zeros. Using his aircraft's tight turning radius, ability to withstand high G's and lots of rudder, he shot down two of his opponent's and damaged the third Zero.
How about "The Battle of Britain". Five years in the making.
And, of course, "633 Squadron" which I saw only 3 weeks ago. My father flew in Mosquitoes in WW II. He used to say nothing like clipping the tree tops at 300 mph!

For flying sequences "Catch 22" and "Airplane' is right up there too, because some times you just gotta laugh at yourself. The bottom of the list (story wise) has got to be "Top Gun" What a wimpy story. If you want to see what Top Gun is really all about do a google search for Top Gun Broke Back Squadron.

'Battle of Britain'. Gotta give credit to the production team for using authentic aircraft whenever possible; even though the 'Messerschmitt's looked wierd, since there were no flyable DB engined 109's available they used the next best thing, the Spanish HA-1112 which was a Bf-109 with a Hispano-Suiza engine.

My favourites are "Dark blue world" and "Menphis Belle"(this two for historical reconstruction), "Firefox"(also the aircraft is fictional), "Skyfighters"(the story is a little "empty" like in Top Gun, but there are beautiful scenes of Mirages 2000.), "Flight of the intruder"

As my Y!A ID says, "Firefox" (Clint Eastwood).
I am not against Top Gun, but its more of Tom Cruise than Tomcats. I just love it for the aerial footage, something rare in those days.
