Hi,
I am a soon to be navy wife and I just had a quick question. My future husband is in bootcamp right now in Great Lakes and he is going to be an SK.
When he went down to MEPs in San Diego, the guy who had him pick his job told him that this job would never be put on a ship out to sea.
I was wondering if anybody in the Navy (currently or not) or even better, if an SK could possibly tell me if this is true or not?

Also, if he is put onto a base, what bases are they usually put onto? Or is it any/all bases?

trust me, SKs not only have sea duty, the chances of his first duty assignment being a ship is about 90%.

SKs can be assigned anywhere. including Overseas.

He got lied to or misunderstood what he was told.

The truth, SK's are on every single ship in the Navy and every single submarine.

He WILL go to a ship out of "A" school and he WILL do his ENTIRE first enlistment on a ship before being able to transfer to shore duty.

He can get stationed ANYWHERE the Navy needs him to be because that is how many places SK's are needed.

He enlisted in the Navy not the job at the mall. He WILL deploy and he will spend a lot of time on a ship.

We are Sailors, going to sea is our job.

SK's can and will go on ships if that is where they are needed. They are the ones that make sure all the parts, equipment, food and so forth are ordered and received. Most likely when he has finished his schooling he will be sent to a ship. With SK's they can also go to other branch bases if that is where they are needed at the time, including overseas.

As I sit in a camp in Iraq at this very moment I can tell you that since arriving here we have had an SK here handling all of our supply issues. He went to boot camp, "A" school, then deployed with us to Iraq, His first duty station! My point being, any base is possible. He also told me that MOST of his friends in "A" school went on board NAVY ships, only 3 SK's were sent to shore bases in his class.
I hope this helps you.

They lied to him! 90% chance he is going to a ship!! SKs go to ships!!! If He doesn't go to a ship, he will more than likley be sent to an overseas base like Guam, Japan, Bahrain, Diego Garcia, Spain, or Italy. Bahrain and Diego Garcia are unaccompanied. Which means he can't take family with him.

you have been lied to. sk's go to ships and he will deploy like everyone else. unfortunetly the length and frequency of deployments falls under operations security but you guys will find out soon enough. i deployed as quick as 9 months into the navy.

The Navy has sea/shore rotations, so the chances of him being away from home for some portion of his time are 100%. He may not be on a ship, but he will definitely be away from home.

We had navy personnel in Misawa.....not a ship for miles. Actually the Navy had the flight line at that time. Any and all bases.

Hate to break this to ya', but we have three SKs on my boat. So yeah, they do go out on deployment. Maybe not Iraq and such, but ship's, yes.
