Not exactly weird or strange, but I just finished "Crosley" the story of Powel and Lewis Crosley. The Crosley corporation, along with several other firms, assembled proximity fuses for artillery and naval shells, under highly secretive conditions. The proximity fuse is certainly a bit weird. Patton and others stated that it brought us victory at a lower cost of lives. It was also responsible for shooting down many kamikaze planes at Okinawa.

The History Channel did a show on this subject. I wish I could help you more. But the only thing I remember is small incendiary bombs fitted to bats and then released over Japan. The bats would roost on the paper homes, and then poof, a fire.
