Why do some people recommend not painting a wall black or using too much black in the house. One friend of mind said, that negativity can hide in dark areas. Another friend said, she knew someone who painted their room black, and they became depressed and thaught about suicide.
Yes, I know about the psychological aspects of color, but is black an exception when decorating?

What about a red wall? What emotions/feelings might this bring about?

To me, black isn't 'depressing,' it's INFINITE and MYSTERIOUS. My husband is an artist, and I would LOVE to be able to have black walls so I could hang some of his religious art (he does black pencil on white paper, very intricate and surreal, very religious) to show that off ... but we live in a small apartment, and I can only 'dream' ... but if we move next year and get a larger place, I'll hang black cloth on at least one wall, to 'show off the art' to it's best.
Everyone has something 'bad' to say about EVERY COLOR. Even 'pure white' is boring if that is all there is in a house or apartment. If you don't live in a place where you can paint your walls the color you want them, may I suggest hanging cloth, using the drapery color you want, and even getting furniture of the color you want. If people say 'it's depressing' just smile and say 'You may be depressed, but I think the mystery of the color makes it 'pop' ...' and then change the subject. Some people are just boors ...

No, I don`t think the color black has anything to do with superstition. To me, it is just a dull, very unromantic and not a lively color. Can you imagine walking into a house painted black? Not forgetting the amount of electricity needed to light up the house at night. I believe a house/room should be painted with warm pleasant color like apple green or sky blue. Yes indeed, sleeping in a room painted black could be very depressing. I am not prejudice against black but I think it can be used to complement other colors.

I think it's mainly the psychological aspects of the color. It's like living with seasonal affective disorder all year 'round, if you paint a room black and stay in it a lot. For interior decorating, you really need a lighter color to balance it out.
I love black in my clothing, but even I don't want all of my clothes to be black.
On the other hand, I just bought a wonderfully warm and fuzzy, but black, bathrobe. I can't stand pastels.

To paint a wall does seem a little drastic. I like pastel colors it makes a room look larger. Someone said places they keep people who have nervous disorders they paint pink and grey. that puts people to sleep or calms them down.
Never red it is a color that excites.

no color is an exception when it comes to decorating. If there was an exception than it would probably be the color "clear." You really should only use black (in conjuction with a light color) sparingly as an accent.

Hmmm... perhaps... black is supposed to be a negative color... but black is not actually a color... it's a shade... but anyhow...
Have you heard that living in a room painted red will drive you mad?

color wise black is intresting it is often used to banish evil in wiccian spells ( candle color). it has also been used in art to represent evil there are many pantings that picture the Devil as haveing black skin. ( dantie the center ring of hell were the frozen devil is in the lake) personaly I dont like it for a wall color because it makes me feel like the room is small

I don't see the problem with black, but I would only use it as an accent color, not the main color because it would be to over powering
