The late Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Traveled, examined this in detail in his follow-up, Further Along the Road Less Traveled. He wrote of four stages of religious belief. I could not do his work justice by condensing it here, but you might want to read Further Along. It did deal with the differences in generations of believers, i.e., the fundamentalists, their children, grandchildren, etc.

People who like to know that everything is black and white, and there is no ambiguity or gray areas to need to reconcile, I would guess. That makes life easy, not only for religion BTW, but for lots of other things as well.

I don't think it's liking to be told what to do, although that may be some of it. If you don't think for yourself, you don't have to be responsible for your actions. Again, that's not only religion.
