I know someone who got married at lovers point in Pacific Grove. Usually, you need a permit to set up chairs and such, however they got around it by having their 20 guests stand around them during the short ceremony. Then they all went to a nice restaurant where guests could order what ever they want, and the brides father picked up the bill.
I can't remember if they brought in the cake or if the restaurant made it. Either way, most places will let you bring in a cake and charge a small cutting fee (not cool for a large group, but for a small group it's not too bad).
My MOH did the same thing, but got married on a beach in Santa Cruz.

You need to obtain a permit. It could be the local Parks Department. If you do not obtain a permit they may kick you out. It's relatively inexpensive and it's worth the peace of mind. Many local parks have areas they use for weddings.
For the easiest and least expensive option - if you're planning on having some kind of reception, have the ceremony AT the reception site. There may be an extra fee but it will still save you money in the long run.
Another option is a destination wedding where the hotel/resort will allow you to wed on-site. It helps to keep things small and affordable, and you get to have your wedding in a beautiful location.

I don't know about "anywhere" if you do not "own" the property - there are such laws as trespassing and such that could come into play. For a park or a beach you should check with your local department of parks and recreation - usually they require a small fee and/or a permit - but they will also grant you a rental of the site for the fee for a time span. Often you can do this on-line and down-load the forms too.
Good luck to you :)

Hi and congratulations!
You most certainly CAN DO THAT!! How pretty.
What you need to do is when you find "the location," be it a beach or a park, call the CITY office that the beach or park is located in and ask them about their policies on weddings. Most all beaches are public as are parks...so you will NOT be the first to ask! Call the city office and they can tell you about any fees or permits that you may have to obtain.
Also, since beaches and parks are public, please be aware that you may have onlookers. But I would think that most people have common courtesy and would tone down their party if they see that a wedding is taking place.
Yes, it would most definitely be legal. As long as you have it officiated by a minister or judge or justice of the peace (or whomever else is legally authorized in the State of California to marry a couple.)
Good luck!

You can definitely have your wedding at a park or beach, as long as they are public. In some places you have to obtain a license first. You should talk to a department such as the department of natural resources or even a park office to see whether or not you have to have a license. They'll answer any questions you may have. They may also let you rent out certain areas for your wedding so that way you are guaranteed privacy. I'm getting married in a park next summer. We don't need a license and they're letting us rent out a specific area for only 25 dollars.

You can have a wedding at a park or a beach if it isn't like BLM land or private property. But you have no control over who strays into the area in that situation. Some parks and beaches are owned by BLM, and you can still have a wedding there, with permission, and that will give you some control over who is in the area during the ceremony.

You'll need a permit in most cases if it's public property. In some cases, if you need to reserve a certain area or have certain conditions for a ceremony, you'll have to clear it with, say, the parks service.
Time to contact the authorities. See if you can find a website or call the place where you want to have it and see what kind of restrictions they have.
In this case, it's better to ask for permission than forgiveness. You don't want to start your marriage with the cops showing up and breaking up the party...

Oh nooo I've heard of weddings on beaches and in national parks all the time! You can do that, but you can't just DO it. You have to talk to someone about it first to get permission and to keep the public away, etc. Not sure who though :/

Absolutely. It can be as simple or as elaborate as you like! Check with the local park system to see if there is a site that is commonly used and I'm sure that it will be lovely for you.
Congrats.
