Use Dawn or some other type of dish soap - it cuts the oils and grease really well - the oil that his/her skin is emiting is what makes em stink - if you get that off - the stink be gonne - i use it on my dogs all the tie and it works great. - use very little though cus it can dry out their skin - what i generally do is first use some dawn and then use some like pantene pro-v or sumthin to remoisten the skin

Someone mentioned checking his mouth to see if it's his breath/teeth that's the problem. If so, those "greenies" chew treats might help. Another thing I haven't seen mentioned would be to check the other end for possible problems. Dogs have anal glands that produce vile smelling liquid. Sometimes these glands get full and need to be expressed. Not something I'd recommend for a person who hasn't done it before, but a groomer or a vet could take care of it for you. Might be worth a try. Another thing, after you bathe him, do you make sure he's completely dry? If he's heavy coated, sometimes the outer coat gets dry, while the under coat stays damp, creating a musty doggy odor. Good luck to you....oh... and baking soda won't hurt him, might not help, but won't do any harm. We've mixed a box with a gallon of water and used it on our horses after they've been stung by bees. Seems to help for that.

If his skin isn't sensitive, bath him with dishwashing soap to cut the body oil. I know it sounds strange but I have had to do that with my dog. Use a hair dryer on him after the bath if he will tolerate it. Brush his teeth so his breath smells better and he doesn't lick himself with such a stinky mouth. Try to have him drink more water so his skin and mouth will be hydrated. His skin may be producing excess oil to compensate for dehydration.

If all that fails, he may have a medical condition that needs attention.

Um yeah.. try to get his hair in the spot that smells the most.. if there is no specific spot, just give him a little trim all arond.. and to take the smell away, mouthwash works amazing.. just don't put it near his face. Good Luck..

It may be that he needs more frequent bathing. hounds sometimes have a smell that is strong because they are who they are. have you given him breath bones or dental care maybe his mouth smells. sometimes supplements can make a dog have an odor as well. definitly give him a bath before giving him to your friend they have deodorizing shampoos on the market

Maybe the smell's from his breath? I was going for a walk the other day and there was a dog smell on the air, but not a dog is sight. Perhaps it was yours. Tee hee.

You may need to change his diet.

I noticed the last food my dogs were on caused an odor.

I switched him to Solid Gold (petco) and he doesn't smell anymore.

He probably needs a higher quality food (that's what mine needed, but I don't know what you feed him).

Maybe you should try to change his diet. Sounds like he may not be getting something his body needs, or could have an allergy. Talking to your vet could help to eliminate common causes of persistant odor.

I would say take him to the Vet as the odor could be a symptom of a medical condition.
