Since the beginning of religion it seems, that its purpose is to cause confusion and conflict and war. All that is needed is to study and learn God's Word the Bible. With so many religions out there, it is hard to say which is "THE TRUE" religion. God's Word the Bible and researching to understand His Word to its entirety is all that one needs.

In my opinion, the purpose of religion is to provide a framework for the right way to worship God, as well as to call people to worship the one true God.

If people didn't have religion, but knew they had to worship God, there is no telling really what would happen.

You're probably going to get a lot of atheist answers.

That's the problem. Too many people here have merely brainless and ill informed, baseless opinions with no real knowledge of anything remotely related to faith. If they spoke in regard to their comprehension of faith, there would be almost nothing for them to say.

The best way to understand something is to listen to its revelation of its self, not the revelations from their own imaginations. If they haven't the basic courage, intelligence, and moral integrity to do so. They need not comment on it. But, this could mean that they would have to resort to asking worthwhile and intelligent questions, from that point forward instead of 'laughing it up' in the bliss of their own hateful ignorance.

To give a person some kind of way to feel more secure, and to be able to have some kind of answer to the meaning of life, whether it is vague or detailed. Religion gives you something to put your faith in, and to help you keep on keeping on.

Religion is the traditions of men. I came from religion and have no desire to go back there! Its the blind leading the blind. I serve God and live by faith in Jesus Christ. I do not need religion to get me to heaven. Only Jesus could do that! So religion serves no purpose in God's eyes. Religion makes you look good by doing good works, but by Faith are we saved, not by works, least any man should boast. God forgive me if I think that my good deeds will get me to heaven.

Support, hope, belonging, development... basically the Maslow's pyramid from the third level up.

Clearly one can reach self-actualization without religion, though. Religion is only one way to get there.

Religion serves its own purpose. It starts when people refuse to admit that they don't know something, then make up stories to explain them away.

But the stories raise even more questions, so you make up even more stories to answer them.
