I think it's never too early to try them on! I mean buying it is another question. HOWEVER I am shocked at the answers saying a few weeks before hand. The invites go out 6-8 wks. If you are a June bride, an alterations lady would kill you (and charge you a fortune) if you brought her a dress 3 weeks in advance.

And David's Bridal is SLOW! If you buy from them, they held my dress in alterations for nearly 4 months. I had to come in and try it on. They would remark it and fix one spot. Then I'd come in and they would remark it. What if the first alteration isn't perfect? You don't want to be stressed, screaming about buying a new dress a couple weeks before the big day. Plus if you have a photographer--some bridal portraits are taken 2 months before.

It took my good friend 5 months of trying on dresses before she found the perfect dress. You aren't going to find it on the first day! I found mine about a year before the wedding and had to order it (1 mo), then had to get it altered (4 mo). And you really should have it in your possession, altered and perfect, a month before your wedding.

So I think if you are talking about being engaged or ring shopping, go look and try on gowns. No harm in looking.

I started looking a couple weeks after I got engaged so I could figure out what styles I liked & didn't like. I just recently found mine (on a GREAT sale by the way!) and we have been engaged for about 7 months now. The dress is one of those things you can do pretty early on even if you have a long engagement like me (18 months). You never know how long it will take you to find that perfect dress. Also, if it has to be specially made, it could take 6-8 months. So I say, start looking now! Good luck & have fun with it!

*Oh, and one more tip:
Try on ALL different styles of dresses, they look very different on you than when they are hanging up on a rack. I ended up getting a mermaid-style lace dress, totally not what I thought I would like on me, but its absolutely perfect!

I would start trying on gowns 6-9 months before the wedding. Most dresses need to be ordered from the mfg. because most bridal salons only carry sample dresses. Ordering process can take up to 4 months, and then you need to allow about 3 weeks min. for alterations and you will probably need them. Book some time with the alteration person with a date at least 3 weeks before the wedding as soon as you order your dress - several fittings may be needed.

I would starting trying on wedding dresses about 4 or 5 months before your wedding. I am getting married March 1st and I bought my dress at the end of September. I went shopping abd found a dress that I really liked and for a great price. The dress was a little small so I knew I had to loose a few pounds. By shopping that early I was able to save money and get a little healthier.

As soon as you want, the sooner the better (unless your wedding is like 3 years away!) that way you can find out what style suits you, not just what fits you. In my opinion you want to have your dress bought and made by 3 months before the wedding to allow time for any alterations - make sure you dress is able to be let out or taken in just in case.
My dress was suppose to be ready 1 month before the wedding, but it wasn't ready until 3 days before. The seamstress had gotten the measurements wrong and I ended up having to wear a dress that was far too big for me and it was too late to get alterations as I did not live in the same town as the seamstress.

a wedding dress can take anywhere between 3-8 months to order...shop when you are comfortable w/your weight and find out what the alteration time is...then order and wait to do your fittings closer to the wedding.

The sooner the better. It can take up to six months, worst case scenario, to have a dress ordered, made, shipped to the store and then fitted to you. It is never too early to start. Good luck.

As soon as you want. They can always take in or take out your dress closer to the wedding.
