Let me give you the quote which is the genesis of this question:

In some ways I'm an Elitist. I do not believe that we are all entitled to our opinions. I do believe that we are all entitled to our informed opinion. - Harlan Ellison

I'm sure Ellison would agree that there are some things where everyone's opinion is pretty much equal - whether chocolate chip cookies are better before or after baking, for instance. (Although if you think they taste better after baking, you're obviously deranged.) On other matters, though, how informed you are obviously makes a difference. Einstein's opinion about relativity is better than mine. Stephen Jay Gould's opinion about evolution is better than any of ours.

So - what do you think?

And, before you report this (and I know at least one of you is thinking of that), "what do you think" is a question. I'm asking this here because it's the opinions of the habitues of this board about which I'm curious.

No, we are not "entitled" to an informed opinion.
It would be nice if everyone had one, though.

The idea that perhaps a handful of people can handle the world better than a billion people can is an idea which has very few supporters. Some philosophers in the BC years wrote in favour of it, but I think, in 2008, it is ready to die.

I used to be an elitist in that I thought that highly educated people should have a weighted vote in elections. As I have grown older, I have changed my opinion on that. Actually, now there are few things on which I bother to have a strong opinion anymore. Obla di, obla da, life goes on......

Open opinions are what makes a advance as a society.

Most Christians tend to be elitists to some degree. Is this why you have posted this question to the R&S section?
