Which Joseph are you talking about?
Edit: Joseph was a common name since it was the name of one of Jacob's kids. You know, the coat of many colors and all that. He had a wife and kids.
The other Joe of major importance was the adoptive father of Jesus as he also had to bear the scorn of his brothers for doing G-d's will. Who would believe that the child was not his? So for the rest of his life, he lived with the criticism of messing around when he knew beyond a shadow of doubt to be innocent.
So while people think that angels solidfy people's faith, Zechariah would say it doesn't. The question would be whether Joe doubted the words of the angel since he did conclude he should divorce and Mary heard his decision.
Those that want to say everything was rosey between these 2 don't live in the real world.
But G-d is faithful and proved to the couple that they were in His will and that they were to suffer unjustly. The question is whether you can say how by the text.
The question about his being a widower is simply not given so no conclusion can be given without adding to the text.

When forty years of age, Joseph married a woman called Melcha or Escha by some, Salome by others; they lived forty-nine years together and had six children, two daughters and four sons, the youngest of whom was James (the Less, "the Lord's brother"). A year after his wife's death, as the priests announced through Judea that they wished to find in the tribe of Juda a respectable man to espouse Mary, then twelve to fourteen years of age. Joseph, who was at the time ninety years old, went up to Jerusalem among the candidates; a miracle manifested the choice God had made of Joseph, and two years later the Annunciation took place.
St. Joseph was an old man at the time of marriage with the Mother of God.

It is assumed that Joseph must have been a widower, because the Bible writers imply it. In John 19:26 & 27, Jesus told His mother, "Woman, behold thy son!" and the disciple whom He loved (John), "Behold thy mother!" and then it says, “And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.” It is obvious then that Joseph was already dead by this time and since Jesus’ half brothers weren’t her sons, Jesus had John take His mother into his home to care for her. Also it appears that Jesus' brothers were much older than Him. They did not accept His claims and the taunted and jeered Him as older brothers would do.

Joseph, Jesus' adoptive father? Nope.
Actually the Bible shows that Joseph died before Jesus did. That is why Jesus had to make arrangements for John to take care of Mary.
