Step one. Go to college and get good grades.
Step two. Take the LSAT and apply to law school.
Step three. Go to Law School.
Step four. Study for and take the bar exam in the state where you want to live.
Step five. Get a job as a defense attorney.

It should take about seven or eight years all together if you go straight through.

You may not be able to go to court right away if you work for a firm. They may want to be sure you are ready before you see a court room. That could take anywhere from a few months to years depending on the firm. If you work as a solo practitioner or a public defender you could be in court just a few days after you are licensed to practice.
