Because they're confused about who God is. God, who Jesus is equal to, only requested people to confess once. Jesus already died on the cross, and has forgiven all sin, for those who recognize their sin, however, in doing so, you must be ready to live right, in the ways God has said, not to just keep on and on sinning because you know theres a confession box in a building, with some guy dressed in black, who says he will forgive you if you say 50 hail Mary's.
Catholics, folks, God never told you to pray to Mary. He never told you to hold rosary beads. He has told you to LOVE Him.
I'm not even going to bother giving links to this question, which will go against everything Catholics believe from the Bible. I'm tired of doing so, and getting nothing but thumbs down for my efforts. If Catholics want the truth, I'm sure they can read, study, and purchase a Bible themselves, or use the Net.

The actual practice of confession, I think, stems from the Roman Catholic selling of indulgences. There was a time, centuries ago, where the Catholic Church sold its constituency the idea that one can come to the church to be washed clean of their sins, or ensure that their departed loved ones had a place in heaven, had they paid the church a lump sum of money when given the “privilege” of confessing their sins to a priest.

Once this practice was abandoned, due to the Protestant reformation- spearheaded by Martin Luther - showing that this was utterly corrupt and unscriptural, the confessing of sins still continued as a tradition. I believe it is still prevalent in the Church, because by indoctrinating Catholic believers that they must come to a priest to confess their sins, the Church authorities will always exercise some control over their lives. Granted there are elaborate apologetic offenses given by Church scholars as to the rightness of this practice, but the logic behind them is pretty weak.

Get a clue, and check into the word contrition. There is no true repentance without being contrite. Otherwise it is just prideful license to sin. Stopping sinning involves acknowledging your sin, not hiding it.

Because they are still blinded from what is true...even to the one they are confessing is all blinded from the truth....Better to do is to share to them what is true principle of repentance, sharing with them the steps of repentance... by doing so, you help them out of darkness.
