I don't believe he would be in the right.
To get closer to God, you don't need to go out and wait for a spiritual experience. You just need to do good and avoid evil. The more you follow what God tells you, the closer you become.

There is nothing wrong with going on a spiritual quest as long as you are still bound to your wife by God's law and marriage laws. In any case the wife should understand and the man would not be neglecting his family if he stayed in touch with them and let them know where he is at in his spiritual quest and how he is doing. Neglect is no contact, no child support, and leaving the child without noone to take care of it. In this case the mother is there with the kids and will be taking care of them if she supports her husbands decision to go on a spiritual quest.

Actually this has been done for the last two centuries.......but the wives and children were not abandoned. They were taken care of by family the extended family. So today if someone wanted to pursue a spiritual journey, they would first make all possible preparations for the spouse and children to be taken care of and of course with the wife's blessing. A far more spiritual endeavor would be to support and raise the family while seeking a higher consciousness.

The Bible shows that it's the husband's duty to care for his family. In fact, it says that a man who fails to do so is "worse than a man without faith" and that his prayers could be hindered, not heard by God. -1 Timothy 5:8; 1 Peter 3:7
Since God is loving and wants his people to be the same way, he certainly does not approve of a man leaving his wife and children behind to fend for themselves. Remember, Jesus said that a man and a woman should "stick together" and not be "put apart". -Matthew 19:4-6
Really, a man doesn't need to leave house and home to find God. Acts 17:27 says that we should "seek God" and "grope for him and really find him, although, in fact, he is not far off from each one of us." By humbling our hearts, and reading the Bible with the view of learning really what God requires of us, and by striving to obey his written word the Bible, he will let us find him.

I'm not a Christian, but this is an interesting question. I think that's pretty crappy. Of course on the flipside - if the guy is like that - the wife and kids are probably better off without him. Sounds to me like the relationship with God, in this instance, was used as an excuse to shirk responsibility.

That goes totally against the word of God right off the bat. He said go and become one with your wife. Also let no one seperate what God has joined together as one. I What If's are never ending for example what if the sky was an illusion

One of the ways you draw closer to God is by honoring your family. If the wife doesn't believe then he needs to be in some serious prayer for her. He should not abandon her. Ultimately though, God comes first.

Well, I'd say that if they live in a community property state, then the man ought to be allowed to pursue his spiritual quest unencumbered by 50% of his net assets.

I believe that he would be wrong. While it may be admirable to seek a closer relationship with God, it is not socially acceptable, nor does it conform to the ideology of goodness ascribed to Judeo-Christian beliefs, for a person to abandon their family and their responsibility to their loved ones.
