If one has the patience and care to do this, it's a GREAT idea.
I regret the numerous times I, actually, THOUGHT about bringing my camera along on some errand or other, and MISSED a great opportunity, because I decided not to lug the camera along.
Crossing a suburban culvert and seeing several white cranes feeding among the reeds of a creek.
The flock of geese, circling above me before landing in an empty lot next to the parking lot of a fast food resaurant.
The brand new Bradley Fighting Vehicle, being transported from the FMC factory.
The WWII bomber landing at our local airport for a tour.
The line of Harleys, outside of a roadside diner, just fifteen minutes from my home.
The band of Mariachi's, walking from one restaurant to another whill my wife and I were on our way to dinner.
I STILL don't carry my camera EVERYWHERE I go and I will still miss a few shots. The good thing is that I OFTEN carry my equipment and manage a few lucky shots once in a while.
The single white crane with a fish in it's mouth that it caught from a local city park. Two terriffic shots, includeing one with the whole body and another, telephoto close up of the head, showing it's strange eyes and the sunlight glinting off of the fish scales.
The family of gees and numerous goslings, following the mother back to the water of a local resevoir.
The old, WWII era tank at a military museum in Nebraska, along with numeruous helicopters, old jeeps and assorted fighting vehicles and equipment.
Numerous, customized show bikes being unloaded from a van, going into a custom car show.
Formula One, Can Am, sports cars and assorted strange vehicles racing at the picturesque Laguna Seca Raceway, near Monterey.
Jazz bands playing at an outdoor venue, Blues band playing in a converted barn, a casual group of strangers, having a jam session on the beach.
Some were events at which I planned to take pictures. Some were just lucky events.

I finally got a "decent" pocket camera - the Canon SD900 - so I would be able to carry it with me at all times. Well, if I am not wearing a jacket, I might not have it on me, but there's always the cell phone camera. I'd say that I wear a light jacket some days just for the purpose of carrying the camera, so I'm a little nuts about it.
We had a Bald Eagle come down into our back yard twice that we witnessed and once in the front that I saw. Too bad I didn't have a camera then. I had to go in the house to pick it up and by the time I was back outside (30 seconds), he was gone.

I typically grab my camera each time I leave the house - mainly because I never know exactly what I'll see while I'm out. Because of that philosophy, I've caught quite a few shots that I would have otherwise missed.
As for the bird, it's most definitely an American Kestrel - aka "sparrow hawk", and one of my favorite raptors.

I have to agree it looks like a Kestrel.
I agree with the philosophy of having a camera to hand at all times...but I don't always follow through and I've missed some great opportunities. It will depend on the type of photography a person does.

It is a male American Kestral. They are really common.
I try to always have my camera with me where ever I go. I like to have it ready just in case something shows up.

and i generally take the olympus with me when i leave the house, one just never knows when a great shot will become available...saw a speckled kite one day and didn't have a camera, haven't seen one before or since and it would have made a great shot, he just sat there and looked at me looking at him. didn't budge for several minutes....
