I have downloaded several documents and now my MS word is in weird format. Windows XP and Word 2000. Have tried saving as Word.doc but no luck getting rid of symbols etc. Thanks in advance. Jan

Try resetting the HTML codon.

it sounds like where ever you down loaded from had their documents on a different system or format, so when you downloaded it into Word, deciphered it as boxes and squares and squiggly lines etc. In other words its a format not compatable with word. I say find another place/site from which to down load ask first what vechile was used to type it on. Then delete those files with the incompatible format. Also I found this phenomenon when I look into the control panel and settings. Try to access the files through your "my documents file" Hope this helps in someway.

You should try to convert the document to some other format, or your best bet...upgrade your software.
