When they are paid something close to reasonable. This is probably a lot more than you want to know, but I'm a writer and so I'm sympathetic...

Here's the problem: for about one year's average annual salary of a single executive, you could hire more than 35 writers and pay each of them what is considered top money for one year. Now execs get paid every year, whether they have a hit or not, but writers usually* only get paid when they make a sale. They only get paid top money when they make repeated sales. There are lots of lean years when writers make hardly anything at all, so they may have to live off of one sale for years. Even the IRS recognizes this and allows writers to declare deductions for about seven years, against one year's earnings. So execs paid obscenely every year, writers, not so much. The IRS allows this for most artistic careers, because they realize that it may take many years to complete a work.

Just like when the actors went on strike, it's not the top paid actors or writers that the strike will benefit most--it's for those people trying to make a living, which like most actors, is most writers.

*There are a few exceptions. One is staff writers, who make a salary which is still unreasonably low compared to their "executive" counterparts. Another is writers under contract. They are paid some money while a company is considering whether they want to buy the work or not. They do not make good money unless it sell. Meanwhile, they can't sell it to anyone else, and with some contracts, they can't sell anything to anyone else.

I'm guessing it will be another 2 or 3 months. But it's all unnecessary. It only makes sense that the writers get a portion of the sales from things like internet purchases. I mean the internet is such a big part of the economy, I don't know why these companies are trying to be so greedy about it. They really need to wake up and get with the times. I don't think it's fair at all of them to not want to pay these writers what they're entitled to.

I miss heros damn the writers strike. Strikes are pointless.
You want more money so you stop working what genius thought of that. And while I'm on a rant they get a nice sum of money anyway when did everyone get so greedy!!!

I hope the networks get this done soon. There are some good shows that might get the ax because of a long hiatus. I am thinking Back to you, Chuck, Journeyman and the Bionic Women.

With the stuff they are writing, I dont know why most of them have a job.
Reality Shows will rule.
I think they have the right to ask for more money on the backside of all these deals and producers should pay it. There is enough to go around.
