I guess nobody will want to make a analog to digital converter box that could be internally mountable because I don't want to deal with carrying the box room to room with a TV that I move room to room. But if there was a cheap enough hack I would be interested. Shame to have to throw the set out in 14 months.

It's unlikely that someone will market an internal converter because there isn't a big enough market to justify the effort.

If there is enough room inside the tv to mount an external converter, the connections wouldn't be rocket science. Relocating the remote control window so you could change channels would be a pain though.

Is the TV big enough to Velcro a converter box to the outside? Seems like a lot more practical solution.

No. The tuner in the converter replaces the one in the TV. To change channels while using a converter you either have to use the remote control that comes with the converter or use the buttons on the converter.

I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I have to decide what to do.

Assuming that you are in the US, the government will start handing out $40 off coupons (max of two per household) on 2/17/2008 that will bring the out of pocket cost down to about $20 each.
