Is it possible that God could inspire people to write new scriptures today, just as he did 2 millenia ago?

If so, would you believe the people that came forward to tell you that they had experienced divine revelation, even if it wasn't 100% what you expected it to be?

Non-Christians, feel free to answer as well - after all, I too am a non-Christian - I simply ask that you respect that this is a theological question posed to those that believe in the deity called "God." I'm seeking the dimensions of the box they draw around him, and this is the first in a series of questions designed to find those dimensions. I don't expect uniformity, differing oppinion will be dully noted.

Thanks for your answers everyone.

I would assume that G-d might just get it right the first time around, though..... :)

Somehow I don't imagine that an all knowing G-d would just get bored every now and then and start revising his own laws. i.e. his eternal covenant with the Jews. Key word: e-t-e-r-n-a-l

And no, I would not believe people who suddenly declared they had experienced a divine revelation. Though of course I would always passionately defend their right to practise and worship as they saw fit, so long as it didn't harm anyone.

That's just it... the christian religion is so biased that they wouldn't accept additions to the bible. The bible has been edited so many times, that some of the 'truth' that was there to begin with is missing even today. if it didn't exactly go along with what was expected, then they just deleted it. (Get ready for the thumbs downs!!!) so many wonderful things have happened to people outside of the Christian faith, but those good things *just can't* be because of god!!! (do u sense the sarcasm?)

Even if Jesus came back today, and announced that it was him, you'd still have a majority of Christians saying that the new Jesus was a false prophet.

An interesting thing about that question is yes, and yet, no. I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We believe that back in the 1800's God the Father, and Jesus Christ, lifted the veil to speak personally to Joseph Smith Jr. He founded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints based on nothing but the church's teachings back when Christ was walking on earth. Since then we have had numerous prophets who are all messengers of God. Every church member, and even non-church member is asked to pray about whether the Gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is true because knowing the gospel is true can only be known to someone personally. We have not added to the Bible in anyway, but in the 1800's Joseph Smith was given a set of golden plates from which he translated into "The Book of Mormon." Behind that is the Doctrine and Covenants which gives an account of Joseph Smith and some of the revelations given to him, as well as prophets who have recieved revelation after him (which is the modern day part). Again, the only way to know if these things are true is by praying to God and having faith in God that he will answer your question. Today there are small booklets that the leaders of the church have put together to help members today understand the teachings of the past, but these are not to be placed with the bible or Book of Mormon, or Doctrine and Covenants. There is "True to the Faith" which helps people stay strong to their morals, as well as stuff for teenage called "For the Strength of Youth." These books have scripture references. So yes, we do believe in modern day revelation and it is our belief that God the Father and His son Jesus Christ speak to our current day Prophet. We do not add anything to the Bible, Book of Mormon, or Doctrine and Covenants.

I would also like to agree with the other LDS person above who stated we get "scripture" through General Conferance. This is true. Every six months we receive new revelations or reminders of what we need to do to stay righteous in this world. They use references from the Bible, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants. The heads of the church speak directly to us, and are given inspiration on what to talk about.

I hope this answers your question.

Have a great day!

I believe there will be a new book written in the New Testament at the fullfillment of Revelations. Whether or not this is in our lifetimes is in the hands of God. But even without the end of the world, God has the ability to do anything, including create new prophets.

Dear Friend,

The Author of the Universe, God...can most definately do whatever He desires to. After all, He is God. The Alpha and Omega. The Beginning and the End.

However, everything we need to know about how to live an abundant life on this earth (His way), He has already supplied us in His Word, The Holy Bible.

Revelation is very clear. Rev. 22:16-19 says, (Jesus speaking) "I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

God...is spirit. He created us in His image which means we are flesh and spirit. To understand things in the flesh, we just look around us and can "see" ...like the trees, water, sky, rain, sun, etc. However, God... when He wrote the Bible through man, wants us to see and understand things in the "spirit." The only way a person can do this is by accepting Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. THEN.. God gives us the Holy Spirit (spiritual teacher) to teach us the things that we cannot see, but CAN understand about ourselves, creation, how we are to live by His standard and why, etc. God opens our spiritual ears and spiritual eyes when we "sincerely" seek Him. He is in the heart changing business and knows if we are truly sincere, or not. God gave all mankind a choice. To either accept Him, or reject Him. To accept Him means we reign with Him in a glorified body forever (eternity). To reject Him, means that we rebel against His character and we live separated from our Creator for eternity.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely in Christ Jesus,

lostnsavd...

i suppose hypothetically he could. however who would believe it with all the stuff out there like the book of mormon. let's drop hypotheticals and look at that realistically, if that smith dude really found a buch of gold plates, you believe he wouldn't have melted them down and sold the gold rather than having to brain wash his followers into tithing? if a new book was written it definately would not be anything anyone expected, because how can we expect things from a nonexistant non-entity? be very interesting to see how the thumpers will be answering this and i for 1 look forward to the rest of your questions to come.

Yes, and He does. We get new scripture every 6 months in General Confrence. God does nothing except he reveal His secrets to His prophets.

first off, this is from a Christian viewpoint (just for your reference!)

it is most definitely possible that God could inspire a new addition to the Bible. however, if you look carefully at the Bible now, what is there that needs to be added? everything we need to know has already been addressed.

Yes, I believe that is possible but I think most people would chalk it up to lunacy or fanaticalism.

Could it have possibly happened already?
