DO degree is treated in the US as equivalent in every way to an MD degree. However, there are far fewer DOs (19 schools compared with 125 schools offering MD) and most osteopathic schools are oriented towards family practice.

I would think if a D.O. was a surgeon, that he would prefer to have M.D. as his title, rather than D.O. It must be the Medical Board for the state/province you live in that allows D.O.s certain priviledge to perform certain surgeries.

I don't think I would want a D.O. working on my heart or brain in the open. A surgery to fix my knee, wrist, ankle, yes, but any other non-osteopathic type surgery, no.

no not really. it is less common than finding an MD. for one there are less DO's secondly about 50 % of them go into primary care fields. However a number of them, do go into surgery.
