Successes are what people aspire to and remember. Failures are what people recoil from and forget.

Curiously however, in my opinion, the failures are precisely what lead to the successes.

I think the determining factor is the specific nature of the failure / success. Take the case of Martha Stewart. First of all, her crime was not considered revolting or perverted by society's standards. Second, her home-decorating advice is practical and popular. Many people appreciate her for it. Put everything together and you have a person who was bound to be forgiven eventually. On the other hand, Rudy Giuliani's former right-hand man Bernard Kerik, and once-football-great OJ Simpson, are both in very serious trouble despite the fact that they once had shining moments in their lives.

To me: A person is defined by how they deal with their failures and how well they win or lose,,, not by how much they've won or lost..

However, it is a human trait that 1) people tend to delve into their spiritual nature when they have suffered loss
2) People tend to be complacent after winning.

Therefore, it is said that those whom have suffered and found themselves are blessed.
