Have a mutual friend hint to him that you might be interested in going out with him. That way if he doesn't want to ask you out you have not lost face and if he does you have accomplished what you are after.

You have to keep in mind there is a chance that no matter what hints you drop he may be even more afraid of looking stupid than you are and will never gather the courage to ask you out.
Would you consider extending a social invitation to him that isn't really a date? It'd be a good start.
Something like inviting him to a friend's house party is pretty minimal risk because you can just seem like you want it to be a good party, but he'll have to take note of the fact that you thought to invite him.

I'm I guy, but my f-ing avatar wont change after my stupid older sister eff'd up my account. So here is your advice:
If your gonna be in class with him forever, you'll probably just keep wondering if it would have worked out. Make the first move. I like it when a girl asks me out. Most guys aren't stupid enough to say no when they are asked out. If your dream dude doesn't like you but is giving you that impression, than he is probably really eff'd up.

your fears are the same his are. what makes you looking/feeling stupid so much more important than him looking/feeling stupid? I personally, and a lot of guys I know, hate it when girls would rather let us know, telepathically, that they like us. then we find out later, after she has a bf, that in the past she liked us. It's a big WTF. Boldness is a huge turn-on for us guys, it shows us how much you care. besides, as a girl, you have far less to lose than he does if you ask him out and he doesn't like you.u. You probably wont heed this advice, though, and will be shocked to see that he was snatched up by a bimbo who was bolder than you, and who is not nearly as good for him as you would be. Good Luck..

You should try to hang out with him more often. And he'll soon like you and eventually he'll make the first move. Trust me ;]
P.S.- Maybe he's just shy.

just talk to him, show an interest in what he does, but DON'T throw yourself at him and come across as desperate. it will scare him off. dress nice, smile at him now and again. do this for a day or two, then snob him. then start again. he'll get confused and want to know more.

Flirt, and keep the flirting pressure on. Show him your best feminine side and try and figure out what he wants in a relationship, and become that person.

He doesn't HAVE to ask you out, you can ask him out your self off course, just keep talking to him, show interest towards him, and if you do ask him out and he says no, then you shouldn't feel stupid, you should feel that you at least asked him out. So you shouldn't feel bad about it. If you don't want to ask him out in public, pull him aside and just ask him out.

Ask him to hang out with a group of people, so it is not you just asking him out. That way you can see what it is like hanging out with him outside of class.
Or, ask him to study together for a big test.
Or, best of all, just get over it and ask him out!!!!
If he says no, he's prob. gay.
