This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. SACD isn't supported. It's the latest version.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.

The 20, and 60gb use hardware to play PS2 games. The emotion engine is built in so the compatibility is better (basically it has a PS2 built in). These versions are identical when it comes to playing PS2 games.

The 80gb uses software emulation (similar to the xbox 360, but better). It has more issues because of this, but updates are always fixing these problems.

If you are in the UK (or any PAL region), however, the 60gb uses software emulation rather than hardware, and there are no 20 or 80gb versions.

20gb not sold anymore so i dont need to talk about it but yeah its just like the 60gb has the emotion hardware that makes it fully backwards compatible....

yeah 60gb in terms of backwards compatibility same as 20gb

80gb limited backwards compatibility because emotion hardware taken out to cut costs....

hope this helped you out!:D

the 60 and the 80gb versions are very similar only the 80 is newer but the 60 is better in the ps2 games compatibility. the 20 and 40Gb eddition are very similar only the 40 is newer but these two versions are not compatible with ps2 games and they dont have a memory card slot

20gb and 60gb ps3's backward compatible are using hardware, which means that you can play at least 97% of your ps2 games.

80gb ps3's backward compatible are using software, which means that you can play at least 72% of your ps2 games. they are emulation.

40gb ps3 cannot play ps2 games.
