If you are taking another couple out to dinner, wouldn't you ask them what type of food they like? I will be going out to dinner next week with my husband and another couple to a restaurant that has nothing but fish. Neither one of us eat fish. It is a very up scale restaurant, but the only reason they picked it is because is it close to their house. Does this seem appropriate?

I offered other places to eat at and they are refusing to go anywhere else. She said they made reservations and are not going to change them. I guess I will just have to move my food around so it looks like I am eating!

They are treating us. I am a vegetarian. They very much know I do not eat fish or any other type of food. I suggested multiple places to eat before we picked a date and they chose this place. It was not one of the one's I suggested!!!

I do. I think that it should've been a decision made by the whole. It's not fair that they get to stay close to home, stuff their faces and make you sit there with nothing to eat cuz you don't like fish.

With something like a strictly seafood restaurant I would have absolutely asked if the other couple likes fish since so many people don't like it. I can't imagine though there is nothing else besides fish on the menu if it is an upscale restaurant. Have you checked the menu and are certain that is all there is?? I guess you could call the people and say you just realized it is nothing but fish and you are not able to eat fish and ask suggest another place. You can also say it is so nice of them to ask you out for dinner but would hate for them to spend money on a meal you cannot eat.

If you really can't eat any of the food, then politely decline. People notice if you don't eat a bite of anything.
However: Almost every restaurant has salad. Even if it usually comes topped with meat (say, shrimp), you can ask them not to put it on. You can even call the restaurant up in advance and ask about vegetarian alternatives. Many do, these days.

Since it is next week, you have plenty of time to suggest another place. Be polite about it, but call them up and suggest another restaurant instead. If they ask why, tell them that you and your husband prefer other kinds of cuisine to fish. To be kind, choose a restaurant that serves fish along with other options, since they obviously like it. That way, you can both order something you'll like.

They are refusing to change restaurants because they already made reservations. My suggestion would be to have something come up a day or two before the date and tell them that you are sorry, but you and your husband won't be able to attend.
And yes, it is considered good manners to consult with others when you ask them out to dinner.

I know you already suggested other places, but did you tell them that you suggested it because you and your husband both dislike fish?
I think you should just say, 'Im really sorry, I don't mean to be awkward but, we don't actually eat Fish so do you mind if we switch retaurants to something with more variety?'
Offer to arrange it so then they don't have the excuse of having to change things around.

It depends!
If they are taking you out to dinner as a "gift" of some sort, they should ask where you would like to go. If you decided together to just have a "double date", everyone should agree. If they are paying, it is their choice. More info! Plus, don't be so hard on them, they may not know you like fish. Honesty is the best policy.
