VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations, many of them in your area. Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site (http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/).

History of Christmas in the USA: the first Christian Americans banned observations of Christmas. In colonial New England, this disapproval extended to actually making the holiday illegal, with celebration punishable by a fine. Major American Christian denominations--Presbyterians, Baptists, Quakers, Methodists and Congregationalists--either ignored Christmas or actively discouraged recognizing it until the late 19th century. That rejection was rooted in the lack of biblical sanction for Dec. 25 as the date of Jesus' birth, as well as suspicion toward traditions that developed after the earliest days of Christianity.

"Christmas: A Candid History," by Bruce Forbes, a religious studies professor at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, is a very interesting read and provides more i nformation on the history of Christmas.
