How come, when I watch a movie, that nothing that is done to human beings affects me at all, no matter how cruel, but---if one single dog is even slightly hurt, I feel so terrible and weep uncontrollably! What is wrong with me? Do others feel that same way??

I can't say I feel NO sympathy for humans when they get hurt, but I know that I react VERY strongly to an animal being hurt (shot, hit by a car, horses that fall down in shoot-outs, etc...) in a movie. I don't know if it's wrong. Do you feel absolutely NOTHING for the injured human, or do you just feel MORE for the injured dog?

There are plenty of people out there that worry about how other humans feel. I personally feel like humans can take care of themselves, so I feel more sympathy for a dog.

We're also pretty used to seeing people get beat up or shot in movies and their character is usually either in a business where that's expected (vigilante cop, warrior, etc...) or they've kind of brought it upon themselves (gangsters, bad guys, etc...). Where you know that the injured dog is an innocent victim.

Depends on the situation, too. If there's torture involved, forget about it...human or canine, the image will haunt me for months! I have a BIG problem with rape scenes, too and I won't even watch a movie if I know there is one in it because it just makes me physically ill.

Try to remember that it's just a movie and even the animals are actors. Think about the dog getting his big piece of sausage for "playing dead" so well ;)

I do the same thing. I think that i do it cause i know that a animal really can't protect itself. Same as a child. I can handle watching adults getting treated cruel, but when i watch an animal or child being treated that way i get really upset and cry. Also a lot of animals who are treated cruel are done so by the owners so that means that the animal is loyal and it can't and won't fight back. Same as a child. Yeah sure a dog can bite you, but what can it really do if you are beating the crap out of it or even so what does it do if your not feeding it. It just takes it cause it can't do anything about it. Look at the situation. A animal is the same as a child if you don't feed it then it never eats cause it can't feed itself. If you beat it what can it do? Nothing, but take it. An adult in that situation can get it's own food also they can defend there selves to a point. If you are beat as an adult you leave the person that beats you a child can not leave and an animal either can't or won't. A child and animal wants your love and that is it.

Also i wanted to add: The love of animals is a good thing. It only means that you are a good person at heart. There is nothing wrong with that. I love animals very much and yes it hurts when you see them in any type of pain.
Also i'm sure that in real life if you lost someone that you love very much you would cry. Same as me i lost my brother and it hurts really bad and yes i cried a lot. You are talking about TV and adults that you don't know. If an adult that i loved very much was being hurt like that i would get very upset and i am sure that you would as well cause you do cry over animals.

Most likely reason is simply that that is what you identify with easier. Its the same reason many people wont cry when a loved one dies, but will cry from a commercial about something unrelated. Its simply that you have some emotion that you cant release otherwise, and that is the catalyst for you.

Another option is that you see animals as innocent unlike people and thus its more of a tragedy to you. This is most likely if you also cry about babies on tv, but not crying over babies doesnt rule it out.

A third option would be just a general emotional detachment from people. But were that the case its highly unlikely youd be concerned about whether or not your feelings were ok.

Tragedy affects me, no matter the type, human, canine, equine, rodent, etc.

The reason human violence doesn't affect us as a society anymore, is we are used to it. It's all over the news, in our movies, on tv, in video games. look at how many video games are violent, killing sprees and that's acceptable, but you certainly don't see any where they run around mass murdering animals. Hunting games are different, still not my forte but not nearly as nasty as those where they have all the big guns and blood and guts splattering everywhere. No, I have no desire to see animals done in the same fashion, I'm just saying it seems to be socially acceptable to decimate our own species, while we rush to protect the animals. I think it'd be nice if we could show the same consideration to our own kind. Hence, I don't watch violent movies, tv, or play violent games. I just can't handle any of it.

I hope that is normal because I am the same way. I cannot stand cruel treatment to animals. I don't like movies with cruel treatment for humans, and I usually turn the channel. I don't even like when the lioness takes down her prey; and I know she needs to eat. Flip that channel quick!!.

I love the animal planet and watch a lot of their programing but I cannot understand why people abuse a furbaby. My son refers to himself as his Mom 2 legged child.

Hi
I am the same exact way and I think It is because I am such a huge animal lover and I think it is because animals are so unable to defend themselves and we as humans are so cruel and will go and torture poor defenseless animals as humans are cowards and cannot stand up to someone there own size so they take it out on someone who cannot fight back
It is so Very Very sad
I cannot believe it it always makes me angry and I cry about it all the time
Respectfully Yours
Anne

A lot of people feel the exact same way as you do...for some people they care much more about animals and what happens with them. When people like you watch movies that deal with animals being hurt it is natural to feel that animals pain!

I'm just like you!

LuvMyBT took my example! I watch CSI weekly, see people (children too!) being 'killed' in the show, and it doesn't upset me one bit. However, last week, the episode was on dog fighting, and I literally sobbed from the minute they showed the dog fight until 15 minutes after the show was over (total time of like...45 minutes!).

I think it upsets me more because animals are SO defenseless....and SO innocent...and they don't understand why people are doing such horrible things to them. It breaks my heart.
