My vet treated ear mites in my cat by putting 2 drops of Frontline in each ear, then the rest on the back of the neck. A member of our family claims her vet says we should not put Frontline in the ears. I have done some research and found out that Frontline can be used to treat ear mites, but I have not seen anything about putting it in my cats ears. Typically it just goes on the back of the neck. Is it OK to put in the ears?

As a certified veterinary technician I can tell you it is not a common practice to use frontline for ear mites
Fipronil which is frontline has been shown to kill ear mites when applied to the ears.
It is used off label.
Which means its has not been extensively studied and the manufacturer is not responsible for any adverse effects. Research does support frontline to be effective against ear mites.
Some cats do have adverse reactions when frontline is applied to the ears.
Cats hate having anything in their ears and may not tolerate it.
That is why using a product like revolution is so easy.
Its applied to the cats neck and still gets the ear mites.

So fear not your vet is not a hack just not conventional.

Frontline Ear Mites

I've never heard of putting Frontline in the ears. However, Revolution is a similar topical flea, ear mite treatment that goes on the back of the neck, I have seen some Vet's apply the Revolution directly in the ears.

The ear mite treatment regimen @ the hospital I work for is Tresaderm (a liquid medication that goes in the ears) twice a day for 2 weeks and Revolution once a month for 3 months.

I'd trust your Vet. Different Vet's have different techniques.

Frontline won't treat ear mites. Revolution and Advantage Multi will help protect against them, but they are prescription products that you'll have to get from your vet. What your vet may have put in her ears was one of those products, not Frontline. (It's an off-label use, though.) Most vets will prescribe Acarexx for ear mites.

I have not heard of that. It WILL NOT treat ear mites if it is placed on the neck as it should be. Revolution will.
Don't know about IN the ears.

From what I have just read, some vet are putting it in the ears, although it is not approved or studied for this use and long term effects.

Guess it is your decision!!

You seriously, and I mean seriously need to get another vet! I've never heard of a VET telling a person that - you get specific ear mite meds from the vet to treat your dog!

Call the manufacturer. They should have an 800 number on the tube or carton or bottle, whatever. Get their opinion on this.

Just yesterday, a man found his kitten in seizures on Yahoo! Answers. Turned out it had ingested a crumb of a flea collar. I have seen regular horror stories about cats ingesting a bit of flea medicine and falling deathly ill and dying. This stuff is not to be trifled with. It can kill. So call the manufacturer. He made the stuff, and he knows what he is willing to risk you doing with it and where the line is drawn, because he's the one who has to deal with lawsuits.
