I have a 5 month old Golden Retriever. He is thin and doesn't like his food. I put his food in his plate (Eukanuba) and he just looks at it. He was just sick a couple days ago (yes we went to the vet). I've checked out his brothers and they're all bigger and fatter than him. I'm actually beginning to dislike my dog because of this.

And if you can't imagine ever disliking your dog... try having an unhealthy thin dog that doesn't like to eat.

Note that I live in a 3rd world country where it would be nearly impossible for me to find a premium dog food.

You shouldn't dislike your dog because of how he looks.. That's a little shallow.. You should find a good quality dog food and change the way he looks.. Improve his health.. Eukanuba is one of the bottom of the barrel foods, Purina, Iams, Kibbles N Bits, Ol Roy, Beneful, Pedigree... all foods that shouldn't be fed to a dog if you want them looking nice and healthy, good strong bones and joints, good coat and everything else.. You should find a food that isn't full of poison preservatives, corn, fillers, colouring... SUGAR.. There are plenty of quality foods out there that are far better than Eukanuba where your dog will actually get nutrition and will be looking good.

Add: If you live in a 3rd world country, with no access to good foods.. Find some recipes online and cook for your dog. Will be much better for him than Eukanuba!

ok I'm sure your country sould have tuna or chicken in a can right try putting it on his food as a topper, and how thin is he? dogs take a minute to bulk out, if you wanted a heavy wieght dog you sould not have gotten a golden that is why you get a mastiff. You need to add fish oil and canned meat to his food he'll eat it then, also only feed him small amounts at a time then he'll want some food. How often do you walk run your young dog, run/ walk him about a 1/4 of a mile then feed him 2 hours later.Warning! he's too young to run hard or be given too long of a walk it'll mess his growth up! What do you mean he was sick? If he is getting over a sickness then he will be behind his brothers in growth also do his brothers live in doors where they larger than him from the start?
Either way don't hate your dog from haveing a different build than his brothers, this is why so many people on this site talk about getting dogs from a good breeder , well bred pups will have uniform growth within the litter no pups will look way different.

Oh the poor dog. Why would you dislike him simply because of something over which he has no control?! Perhaps he is the runt of the litter. If he was sick a couple of days ago, what did the vet tell you was wrong with him? Is this a chronic illness? Something he will get over? Do YOU feel like eating when you have the flu?!!

How is your home that he is living in? Clean? Tidy? Do you people wash your hands with hot soapy water? Are there young children in the house that are constantly harassing him or trying to play and chase him? Is he getting enough rest? Is Eukanuba all he eats? What did the vet say? Do you use a lot of toxins with which to do housecleaning? Did you get new carpeting recently? Did you have a room painted recently?

As you can see, there are a LOT of factors in a home environment that can cause problems in a puppy. If "everyone" (as you put it) has a healthy puppy, and you do not, then it's either you or your home that could be draining this pup. Take a look at yourself and how you treat and care for him before you start condemning the puppy! A puppy is a BABY dog and as such is helpless. Each puppy learns and grows at his or her own speed. It sounds lilke YOU have a lot of growing up to do too! You need to learn patience and maturity.

You can start them on puppy mush at 3 weeks old! very easy to make: 2 cups of good quality dry puppy food crushed in a blender mixed with puppy replacer milk until a runny oatmeal like mush. Pour into pie pan or another very shallow dish! I'd double this for your sized litter. Get 2 shallow pan and feed this to the pups 4 times a day! Water can be introduced at 4 1/2 weeks old. Until then I'd keep them on the puppy replacement milk. Hope this helps.

There are more than enough choices of dog foods, plus there are many ways of making it taste better. For a simple experiment buy a can of tuna packed in oil and drain some of the oil onto the food. Then you can make yourself a tuna salad for lunch and nothing is wasted.

Now here is the catch, do not demand feed, instead put the food down and leave it for 10 minutes. If after 10 minutes the dog hasn't eaten it all pick the food up. One hour later give the dog another 10 minute opportunity. If the dog still doesn't eat pick the food up and dinner will be served again tomorrow.

Not everyone has healthy dogs! Two of my adopted animals from the pound (a dog and a cat) were very ill for a while.

Don't dislike him because of his health...he can't help it. Only you (and the vets) can help him. Eukanuba is probably not the best thing to be feeding a dog. Try finding a higher quality food for him. And if he is severely underweight, ask your vet about what you can add temporarily to his diet to help him eat (for example, cooked white chicken meat, rice, even a bit of canned food.) Give him some time to recover from his illness...he'll probably be good as new in no time!

I know how you feel I have a 2 year old white Boxer girl. She is the best dog ever, but suffers from horrible allergies, which at times make her appear to be sickly (she kinda is) but I love her more than anything all the same.

It's not your dog's fault he is thin and small, don't resent him for it, just be glad that you are able to love and care for him because that may not have happened for him in another home. Cherish every minute that you have with him or you will regret it when he is gone.

You dislike your dog because he is sick, thin, and doesn't like Eukanuba? Grow up.

Get your dog a higher quality dog food, maybe then he'll like it. Talk to the breeder you got him from and find out what he/she was feeding the dogs. Have you talked to his vet about this? Maybe the vet can tell you if there is an underlying health problem...

If you really can't handle the responsibility of such a 'horrible' dog, take him back to the breeder you got him from. Then do yourself and the dogs a favor and don't get another until you have grown up.

Do not dislike your dog because he is rejecting Eukanuba. This is not a very good food and he just might not like the way it tastes. My dog didnt really like his food until I changed to Timberwolf. He is finally eating enthusiastically and the ingredients are fantastic. If you want your puppy to thrive, you have to be patient and look for the right things for him. If one food doesnt work, try another. But please look at the ingredients and make sure it is a high quality food. You dont find most of the higher quality foods in food stores or pet shops, mainly online. Go to dogfoodanalysis.com and check it out.
edited to add: if you are in a third world country, does that prohibit you from reading ingredients? Or feeding raw meat and bones and switching to a raw diet? You need to try harder is my point. And disliking your dog because you are impatient makes you kind of moronic no matter where you are living....
