The crackhead neighbors next door have been screwing with my livestock. I guess they find it amusing to open my gate when I'm not home so they'll get out. I want a dog that can endure cold temps and scary enough to deter a stranger and guard. The dog will have to be outside when I'm not home but of course inside when I am. Don't tell me to put a lock on my gate either for safety reasons. Don't tell me either its mean to keep a dog outside when its a dogs job to guard.

i asked for a breed name not about how dogs belong in the house loosers. You keep your dogs in the house and letting them wear sweaters and crap. I want a dog, and dogs are guardians not pampered whimps

Most livestock guard dogs like Kuvasz and Great Pyrenees were developed to protect sheep from predators like wolves. They might not consider people to be a threat. I would still try one of these breeds. If you can, buy a puppy from a rancher who has the parents for guard dogs. Put the puppy with the stock at a very young age. If you start finding dog crap near the edges of the pasture it means the dog is marking his territory and becoming the guard dog you want. Dogs are pack animals and the livestock will be his pack. Your dog should be as loyal to your animals as to you. A dog with a job is happier than a dog without one. Just make sure he has a good dog house to get out of the wind.

what kind of livestock? Get one of the breeds that lives and protects livestock, Kuvasz is a good breed, the komondor, the tibetan Mastiff, these breeds are working dogs not house dogs or dogs that even do well when left in a home they are bred to live with the herd and protect it. But on the otherhand you don't lock your gate and someone gets bitten by your dog, non of the dogs I listed are attack dogs but it can happen all the same you will be liable because they didn't cute a lock off and can claim it was open.
Lock your gate or some day you'll have alot of lawsiuts to pay for because some a** left your animals out.

There a few different breeds that have historically been used as livestock guardians. Maremmas, Kuvasz, Great Pyrenees, and Anatolian Sheepdogs to name a few. But, even these dogs bred to guard livestock need to be trained to live with the kinds of stock you have. There are many livestock guardian dogs resources on the Web, but it isn't a plug and play solution. No dog is.

Get a sled dog, they tolerate cold.

Only problem I foresee is the neighbors bothering the dog along with the livestock.

If you get a puppy, it's gotta grow up to be a watch dog so it won't be instant.

How about posting a sign on the fence about private property and not opening the gate. Get a security camera system, you can get a cheap one for about $150-$200. Record them tresspassing, opening the gate which lets the livestock out and then call the cops on them. Show them the video as proof and press whatever charges you can against them. If it's kids doing it, show the parents the footage, if they blow you off, call the cops.

purely going to stick an answer I used in this question in the past, because it stands real and that i wish you hit upon it exciting. :) i pass to attempt to furnish you a balanced answer, as i will see the two factors. i like the canines Whisperer for its intents and purposes - as an exciting television instruct. i admire having a snort at those stupid women human beings who enable their fashion designer mutts run rings around them, inflicting lots of worry and additionally you would be able to fairly much see the exasperation in his face whilst they are telling him how their canines are their "infants" and that they are allowed "each and every little thing they desire". It sounds very snobby, even though it makes me very grateful that i be attentive to the thank you to shield canines and which will by no potential take place to me! human beings dislike it for some motives. the ideal one being, fairly some the failings he does require an specific volume of expertise and journey (particularly whilst it comprises concern aggression, foodstuff aggression or prevalent viciousness), and human beings see the failings he does, they think of "i will do this!" And oh seem - they have been given munched by potential of the German Shepherd this is munching all human beings that is going close to him at Meal situations! yet another one is that a number of his strategies are questionable, particularly the Alpha Roll. If no longer achieved good, this is totally risky for the guy doing it or maybe for the canines! This has considering that been removed from his inspired practise innovations. That pronounced, i think of that of course he does be attentive to what he's doing - he gets consequences and facilitates human beings to work out the place they are going incorrect. My substantial element i like him for however, is that he's exhibiting the international how incredible the bully breeds would properly be - canines like Daddy are giving Pits the attractiveness they deserve, that a effective canines whilst properly stated would properly be a great better half. So, definite. I even have an fairly impartial feeling in the direction of Cesar - i think of a few of his artwork is exciting, although i think of that the those that see it as a bible for canines practise and then finally end up hurting themselves or their canines is a actual possibility. it quite is a television instruct, meant to be exciting, and if greater human beings observed it like that, then we does not have those issues.

How cold is it?? if its really cold maybe an english sheep dog.. they are very large... not at all agressive... but could be trained to protect your property and they are very good with stock... all other "agressive" guard dog breeds such as rotties or bullies are terrible with livestock as they cant help them selves... We have a similar problem and we have a Blue healer... (aussie cattle dog) and he's very very good at his job... not sure if you can get hold of one where you are... but they are very hardy dogs and very trainable.. but if its really cold he might need to wear a jacket as they dont really have much fur... well here are some links... good luck...

If your worried about the "crackhead" neighbor doing something to your livestock what do you think they would do to your dog? I would file a complaint with the police and have them arrested for trespassing. If you get a dog and it bites them or they let it out and it gets into trouble you'll be in MORE trouble. It sounds like your really angry, you need to think and get in contact with your local police dept. and see what they would suggest to catch the person, such as a camera or something like that, a dog is NOT the answer! It is a living animal just like your livestock.

Do not get a dog as a security system.

However, if you want a get a dog that can watch the livestock as part of its job then consider a herding breed. Theyll keep the livestock in their place and protect them from aggressors, but like any dog they will require training to do this.

I would be afraid of them hurting the dog or turning them loose as well. As for sled dogs, they would be more likely to: 1) help them open the gate 2) lick them silly 3) be glad to go for about a 20 mile run as soon as the gate rattled. I would be more inclined to try and video the mischief and let the police handle it.
