First off don't leave a dish full of food out everyday. Start feeding him once in the morning and once at night. Measure out how much you normally feed him and then start feeding him a little less then that. For example if you're feeding him a full cup a day of food, back it off to 3/4 a cup. Just the little bit can make a difference. Dogs and cats shouldn't lose weight rapidly. It should take a few months for him to drop a few pounds. Also make sure you are feeding him dry food. If you're feeding him any wet food then start making that meal half wet and half dry. Dry food is better for their teeth. You could always give your vet a call to see what they think. Good luck

Instead of leaving food out for him constantly, try feeding him a small amount in the morning and a small amount in the evening. Keep in mind that an adult cat only needs roughly 1/2 - 3/4 of a cup of dry kibble per day. You can feed more if the cat has plenty of exercise, but keep a good watch on that belly!

Are you feeding dry food? You should measure out the amount of food he should have based on the directions. I feed my cats about a cup of food each twice a day. There are also foods that are supposed to help your cat lose weight. They may be labeled as "light" and are formulated to help lose weight. Also, depending on how overweight he is, the vets do carry weight control food as well. But most of that stuff is bad.....like the Science Diet. You want to get a good food and just follow the directions. You may have to feed a bit less than what the directions say. Also, try to get him to exercise.....play with him with feather teaser, or even a laser light.

You're the one who's giving him the food - stop giving him so much! Regulate his food intake to the amount recommended for the weight he's supposed to be. If he's pestering you for food constantly, switch to a different brand that's going to fill him up more i.e not a supermarket brand.

If you feel the cat has a medical problem, for instance if he's losing weight while overeating, then take him to a vet. You might want to talk to a vet anyway for nutrition advice.

Stop pouring a lot of food in his dish. do the recommended amount for a cat per day and just leave that amount in the bowl. you can't completely put the bowl away though because cats tend to kind of graze instead of eating all at once.

If you are feeding him dry it is like feeding Twinkies to a person trying to lose weight. Dry food is up to 50% carbs and often use by products in place of good protein meat.
Please read this link and I promise your kitty will be better for it. www.catinfo.org
Once I switched to only high protein low (under 10%) carbs my cat ate less and the weight will even out. The wet fills them much faster and they don't need as much to eat.

I had a cat that over ate and we used like a Motts applesauce cup to scoop the food with and then we had to start filling it up half way and only giving him food once a day for like 2 weeks and it helped majorly. My cat didnt starve or anything.

Buy food specifically for overweight cats, also ration his food, read the directions and don't just fill up hi bowl, also feed him only twice a day and provide plenty of fresh water, another great idea is to buy him a toy where he would move around or even one of those laser lights, it keeps them fit!

Stop him. You don't want a fat cat.

If you're free-feeding him stop doing that and instead determine how much he can eat per day and only give him that amount. If you want to put it all in the bowl at one time you can do that or you can feed him at set mealtimes.
