They take the jobs that stuck up snobby American's don't/won't do. They are willing to do it for very little money. They bring culture to this country - their own culture which can be educational to those who are not really exposed to it.
**EDIT: Is everyone reading this question thoroughly? It asks what benefits LEGAL immigrants bring. It is not asking for people to go off about illegal immigrants in this country. What is wrong with a legal immigrant in the US trying to make a life off of hard work for them selves and their children?? The woman who used to clean our offices is a legal immigrant - would YOU clean our offices as well as she did?? - she is now going to school to become a nurses aid. She is a wonderful, outgoing person who is trying for a better life - I feel I benefit from knowing her.

Most legal immigrants have waited on majority 10 years to come to this country. And there is a quota for each country, set up by the US government, on how many people from each country may be granted legal residence in the US. Most of the brain power that comes to this country are legal immigrants in the fields of engineering, technology, medicine, and science. See, unless someone sponsors you then you cannot come to this country as a legal resident UNLESS you are a scientist or a skilled person with a unique skill. Basically all the poor people in 3rd world countries cannot come unless they have a parent here already. And if you are over 21 (I think 21, but definitely in the 20s) and married then you are out of luck, you cannot come even if a parent petitions you.
That's why most third world countries are facing a brain drain. Countries like China and India, all their best students in math, computers, and engineering, leave China and India, and get a green card here.
Most people forget that China and India are still 3rd world where the poor are very poor and only a small percentage are actually living in modern cities. Between those 2 countries they account for more than 1/3 of the world population.
But in a sense, most Americans were legal immigrants at one time or another. Just look at Ellis Island or Angel Island.
All the big name scientists who were involved with making the atomic bomb were wooed to come to this country from Germany the same way.
A lot of Indian doctors and Foreign doctors in general come and serve underepresented areas where American doctors do not go.
One of my closest friends had an uncle who got all his paperwork approved after 10 years and was about to buy a plane ticket for him and his family and died of cancer before he can make it. His 6 year old son and wife could not come as a result, because since he was the one petitioned, his family could only come upon him. He was going to bring them here, let his family take care of them, and then go back home to die, but he couldnt hold on for one more week. It's sad but unless you are highly educated, you are out of luck, even if you do it through the right way.

LEGAL immigrants are quite beneficial. They provide population growth to a country when needed. Their levels can be adjusted as a native people's birth rates grow or decline.
They can provide skilled labor that is suffering decline or need in a specific country. Again, countries can adjust accordingly as their outlook changes. When unskilled labor is needed, LEGAL immigrants can be drawn from the more unskilled ranks.
It also provides a wonderful addition to the country's cultural makeup and diversity. All in all, LEGAL immigration is a wonderful thing. It benefits both the immigrants themselves AND the country that embraces them.
ILLEGAL immigration is nothing but harmful. It is beyond me how anyone can support it. Dealing with our ILLEGAL immigration problem effectively can open up more opportunities for more needed immigrants...those who will benefit our country and fulfill her needs...those respectful of our laws.

Legal immigrants bring cheap labor for American businesses, as does illegal immigration, skilled labor, and they help to keep down the wages of working class Americans. They also bring diseases and parasites, plus Islamic radicals into the country.
On the whole, I would think American benefits from a reasonable number of immigrants every year, but over a million legal immigrants a year is just way too many and a net negative for our country.

I don't know about benefits, but they deserve to be here if it's here legally.
I would have said culture, but I dont think an immigrant today would bring that because it's already here from the other immigrants from around the world.

Not many, except for more tax money. But they don't cause any problems either. I don't care how many people immigrate into the U.S. as long as they do so legally.
It appears that many of the answerers thought you were talking about illegal immigrants. Either that, or they're just racist xenophobes who despise all immigrants.

Well, that is kind of the question about the bear and the woods, but I will humor you.
Karl Steinmetz was a genius in electricity
Werner Von Braun was a very important person in NASA for the development of rockets, etc, etc.
Nikola Tesla was a genius in electricity
Albert Einstein was non replaceable in the development of nuclear physics
The Cubans have developed south Florida. When they began to come here, there were only empty areas with wild grass
Feodor Chaliapin was an excellent singer. Also Enrico Caruso
Need more examples ?

LEGAL immigrants bring culture and desire to America. LEGAL immigrants rarely work the stereotypical illegal immigrant jobs. LEGAL immigrants are usually college educated and work middle to upper class jobs or own their own establishment.

I don't know that legal immigrants bring any benefit.
I'm disappointed that most of the responses to this question didn't even attempt to answer the question asked.
The question is about LEGAL immigrants yet they chose to rant about ILLEGALS. Pathetic.

1) They help us keep a varied gene pool. I was talking to a person I know from Germany who has lived here, in the UK and France and she said that in general Americans are better looking as a people. She believes this is due to the mixing of the races.
2) Many legal immigrants come here on education visas and end up staying. Many others come here on work visas. Both of these help us to keep a cadre of highly trained/skilled workers.
3) They help to broaden our culture. Many things that we now think of as "American" were in fact brought here originally by immigrants.
Of course your question asked about "legal" and ignored "illegal". The main issue as I see it with "illegal" immigrants is that they overwhelm our system. Much as we might decry the poverty seen in the rest of the world we simply can not absorb all those billions at once. It is much better if we as a nation work towards helping poor nations increase their standard of living than to bring ourselves down to a lower level by having to compete in this country for jobs they are willing to take for pennies on the dollar. This is where the lie to "they do jobs Americans won't do" comes into play. They do jobs that were formerly done by Americans but weren't the "preferred" jobs. Despite that people did them but only for a living wage that made them part of our overall standard of living. Having people come in that are willing to live 10 people in a 2 bedroom house at a lower wage because it is still better than what they came from make our own people have to compete at that same level.
I've known and worked with many immigrants (legal and illegal) and by and large find them industrious and enjoy working with them. People often try to pretend opposition to "illegal immigration" is simply opposition to "immigration" and argue about the benefits of "immigration". This is disingenuous as I've seen very few people who've argued we should have no legal immigration.
