I've heard a lot of Christian parents that won't let children have anything dealing with magic. Not just the Harry Potter books, NOTHING. Hadn't heard about the Pokemon [Chippy], but it doesn't surprise me at all.
I don't let my son have violent toys like guns, etc. [he's 6]. We're not as big on the magic thing, we just tell him it's pretend. We have all the H.P. books and movies, but have only let him watch the first one because the plot grows increasingly 'darker'.
To each their own, I guess.

Fortunately my parents weren't like this. They were Roman Catholic, but they weren't very super-religious or anything. I used to have Dungeons and Dragons related toys, He-Man, G.I. Joe. To some very religious parents these might be considered not suitable for kids. I'm just glad my parents were more "normal" than some.
EDIT:
I also used to collect those "Garbage Pail Kids" cards/stickers, which were a parody of the Cabbage Patch kids. They didn't mind those either, but a friend of mine next door, his mother wouldn't let him have them.

LMAO!
i didnt as a kid. but i worked (and still work) at a christian daycare. there used to be a teacher there that would not let the kids play with pokemon because she claimed pokemon were satanic and dealt with magic and what not.
i ignored her and let the kids play with pokemon anyway. lol.
in fact, i recently bought pokemon so i could play with some of the kids. =]
edit: omg, no i didnt. wow. i used to collect pokemon cards when it first came out. lol never seemed demonic to me... the pastor at the church also said we couldnt have anything with santa in it because rearranged santa spelled satan. (he must have ignored the fact that rearranged god spells dog...)
the lady who hated pokemon and wouldnt let the kids play it, she gave me a 5 page packet about how evil pokemon are. I just told the kids to put it away until she left and then they could play with them. *shrug*

I was raised Salvation Army & then Evangelical, and my parents wouldn't even let me see a Disney movie. I soon saw everything I missed once I left this legalism.

Jeez, my children have a lot of care bears... that's insane!!
Well, I am from Brazil and during carnival people wear masks and I remember my mother never bought one for me saying that they were demoniac or something. Nonsense!
Peace!

Spiritually dangerous? No, but my mother wouldn't let me watch The Three Stooges because they were too violent.

There were no toys that my mother wouldn't let me have for spiritual reasons but I wasn't allowed a Barbie because she though they promoted poor self image.

When I had the 'I choose you Pikachu' toy my moms church said it was evil and children were being possesed with it. My mom took it and prayed that if it was evil God would destroy it. I never laugh so hard at her in my entire life.

We were not allowed to have Care Bears or Smurfs in our house. They were magic you know, and magic is of the devil!!!! You could get possessed if you played with one!
