I don't criticize, because i am one. I became pregnant at 16 while on birth control. I graduated high school with a 3.95 GPA in the top 10%. I am going to college to become a nurse and i am on the Dean's list.
Not all teen moms are horrible people. Sure there are the few who abandon their children and live off of state help, but many are better parents than some older moms.
I love my son with all my heart and i would not change anything in my life!

I never criticize teen mothers, if they are in fact acting as a mother to their children. I do criticize teen mothers who have kids and push them off on everyone that they can in order to get away from them. I also criticize the teen mother who has a child that they do not care for and then continue to be irresponsible and have more children that they push off onto their parents and family members.
As for your grandmother, I think that is wonderful that all of her kids are successful. She obviously is a very special person raise 10 kids a such a young age. I am 37 and I have a 10 4 and 5 year old and there are days that I feel that I am going to loose my mind ;0

Teen mothers back when my grandma and great grandma and even further back were not so uncommon. Back then you were more so considered an old maid if you were not married by the age of 18. There was a shorter life expectancy back then versus now. But even back then women weren't permiscuous as they are now either. I'm not claiming to be a saint, but even back in the 70's sex was still not over publisized, etc. Now a days sex is a "natural" thing and has lost all of it's symbolizim, and sacredness. It's now something to just do. It's rare for anyone to stay a virgin until they are married and praise those that manage to have the strength to do it. And yes, I am a sinner that had sex, I even had two children born out of wedlock, but the man I had my children with I had intended to marry. But without the security of marriage that's why he was just able to up and walk away.
Schools teach sex ed courses to teach us all about sex, they even offer in some classes "project" babies. But I think they should go into more depth and also cover more on STD's, further into pregnancy (especially if you end up alone) and all the after effects of having a baby. How it's harder (especially for a woman and even some men) to seperate their feelings from sex itself. Just because he says he loves you doesn't mean he's ready to go picking out wedding gowns.
I know I've gotten a little off track, but the main point is is that times have changed so much between now and back then. Women have more options and time to think things over. It's now ok to wait and have children in your mid and later 20's, women are now able to get out and get not just jobs to put a little extra food on the table but actual careers, where as back when my grandparents were growing up, most of them typically had the main option to just stay at home and have babies.

My mom and daddy had 7 kids starting at age 16 (He was 18).........My mom done a good job and my daddy has always worked so we never went without anything. Our ages now are 33, 30, 28-me, 26,23, 18 and 12......
We all have not been in trouble with the law ourselves. 5 of us have kids. The most any of us have though are 2 kids each but i only have one.
I am against teenage pregnancy though. I know my mom done a good job and i love her so much for everything she done and she does.
I know some people can do good but alot doesn't.
I think all teens should be on birth control if they are having sex. Most kids that teens have do get thrown off on anyone that will watch them. I just think people should not have kids in their teens. This is 2007 not 1973 back when my mom done what she done. It's different now and people should not be having kids in their teens.

Good on your grandmother. She was probably raised during a time period when people still taught their kids to work hard and act like they have some sense, which helped her be a good mom. You can't generalize, but there are enough teen mothers in this generation who would NOT fall into the same category as your grandmother, and who SHOULD be criticized for their negligent parenting. So, personally, I only have something to say about BAD mothers, not just TEEN mothers.

That's nice, but she wasn't happily married. She got married because she had kids with the guy. If you look at most teen mothers today, so many of them have sex carelessly and then their parents do more of the work in raising the baby. It's ALWAYS best to wait until you are about 25 to get married, and THEN have babies.
Edit: It makes me VERY sad to read how so many young teen mothers say they are GLAD they got pregnant when they did, and thus inadvertently, or advertently, encourage other teen girls to do the same. Not a good example.

No, I do not critize but as a teen mother myself I know how hard can be, I married my husband at 18 ( he was 18 also) and our oldest son was born when we were both 19, we had two more sons 2 years apart each and we had tow ork very very hard to make it where we are now, we hjave been married now 15 years, we are very financially secured and our marriage is strong, so yes, we beat the statistics BUT it wasn't without a price, it took a lot of work and love and time so my advice would be PLEASE wait until you are over 23 to have children, not only will you be able to offer them more but you will also be able to enjoy your youth.

Yeah, all of the women did that back in those days, most of them. This is a whole new generation of people out here nowadays. These babies having babies today don't even believe in education, because it does not run in their family to believe in education. Back then the mothers did not have
a lot but what little they had, they took advantage of it (i.e., libraries, church activities, etc...). Those were young women raising their babies back then. These are mostly ignorant little girls with children who are taught that same ignorance from generation to generation. These ignorant children have ignorant parents who spend most of their time smoking marijuana, and drinking booze with their kids and grand kids, we all have seen the little baby on the Internet smoking marijuana not being supervised by appropriate caregivers, not having good role models in their lives.
For example, Britney Spears and her little sister never had a chance of living a half way normal life, because their mom is out there kickin' it with them, like a sister, rather than a mom. We all have to remember our place in life, whether it be mother, father, child, grandparents. Each one of us have to be good role models for our children, and for other children who look up to us for wisdom, knowledge, and direction in life.
PEACE!

That was a different time and place. A 13 year-old wouldn't fare too well in the US if she was pregnant. It's not like she could live on the family farm and raise her own food. It's great that everyone turned out so well, but that is the exception and not the rule.

I take into consideration the following:
1. Who will care for the child? The parents, or the girl?
2. Where is the dad? Is he some loser out partying or does he want to give his kid a good home life?
3. How is she going to care for the kid when she has to go to school? It would be pretty hard to go to college and still give them the attention they need.
4. What was she doing having sex in the first place? I doubt she was trying for a baby.
5. Does she want the best future possible for the baby?
