I can either get a Mazda RX-7 with 33,000 miles on it for $19,500 or a Toyota Supra that has 82,000 miles on it for $17,000. I'm probably going to have to buy the Mazda because I keep getting told that 80,000 miles on a car makes it too old. Would the RX-7 be able to achieve around 600hp when modified?

RX-7's can have high horsepower, but low torque. They are designed for RPM's and redline at like 8K, so do not buy the automatic. The Supra would be a better all around performer, but the RX-7 will have great mid-range power. Luck 2U

Some may say that a car with over 80,000 miles is too old, maybe it is, but some people who own cars with over 80,000 miles maintain the power the cars they own with further maintenance, making them as good as ones with less miles.

About the potential of the RX-7, I've seen Mazda RX-7s with more than 600hp, one I saw was modified with a twin-turbo kit and ECU modifications, as well as lots of other power tweaks that is well known to reach 700hp.

It is possible to get a Mazda RX-7 to achieve power far over the 600hp mark. since it is quite light and is a quick car already, giving a RX-7 at most 400hp would be great for road racing, 450-550hp is great for drifting, but if you want a RX-7 to drag race, give it as much as you can give it with the money you got.

Either way, drifting, race track or drag strip, make sure you also have a modified suspension, brakes, clutch, flywheel, and a great aerodynamic body kit and spoiler to achieve the handling required for that power.

well this is a good question. personally i think i'd get the supra. and not cause i like the looks better, but cause i understand the engine a lot better then i do the rotary motor that mazda used in the rx7. plus 80,000 miles on a toyota is about the same as 40,000 miles on a american car.

as far as looks go, they both look awesome, but i'd go with the rx7s looks

both the rx7 and the supra would be able to make a ton of hp with bolt ons. they both have a good sized aftermarket.

you really cant make a bad decision here. both cars are quite good

good luck

It depends upon what type of racing.

Since you mention 600hp and given the two cars in question, I suspect your talking about "drifting" (which is not racing BTW). If drifting you don't really need all that much power just a low gear and hard tires and the skill to keep'em roastin'. Pick the car your most comfortable working on remembering that the Mazda's rotary engine is quite different than the straight six in the Toyota.

Be aware though, that drifting is all about "style" not the objective criteria of racing where the object is clear - first one to finish wins.
FYI: In style based sports like figure skating, half-pipe, and drifting, sometimes who you know is more important than your skill set.

the supra would be a nasty car...so would the mazda i ratherhave the supra but im not suer because of the 80000 miles that engine is past its prime but i would still get it becasue the rx-7 is probably a lot older so go with the supra its faster already than the rx-7 stock

what year rx 7? the 93-95? go for that. those cars are great. if you need any parts check out rotary performance,in the DFW area here in TX. these guys are the best.

Why not an ocho? it's a 6 speed, the parts are high but man the mods payoff as well.not too good in the city on the mpg's.but a great car

I'm guessing it's the latest gen Mazda for that price. Nice looking but not too reliable. Of course if your serious about that amount of power your not going to be driving much anyway, just working on either one. Mazdas are nice with a Chevy engine (LS2)dropped in. Thats about the only way to keep reliable. I would'nt worry about mileage. It will tear up any stock parts anyway.
