it's possible that they all have essences of truth.
as for "choosing the wrong God" you just have to rely on the fact that God is just and He'll judge them accordingly.
furthermore, the Cathecism of the Catholic Church says:
843 The Catholic Church recognizes in other religions that search, among shadows and images, for the God who is unknown yet near since he gives life and breath and all things and wants all men to be saved. Thus, the Church considers all goodness and truth found in these religions as "a preparation for the Gospel and given by him who enlightens all men that they may at length have life."

I think you have to ditch (give up) on God, and pursue the truth instead. Go for something really important and valuable - useful to you.
Unfortunately religion teaches us a lot of things in error. Information which isn't information at all - but is just dogma and rhetoric - propaganda - "preaching" with such claims as "Only if you believe in Jesus Christ - will you be saved!" kinda nonsense. There is such preaching all throughout the Bible which reinforces the fear of death, and saying God will save you, etc etc.
If you are a truthseeker - go to www.figu.org (English Discussion Forum) where such things are discussed openly and in depth. And a revealing of proper Spiritual Teachings, which is pure information, minus the stuff that religions add on or twist around, etc etc.
Everyone goes to the same place when they die - belief does not change a thing. We are all the same - human beings in physical bodies, that die - and then the spirit is released.

The trick here is, if you've heard the True gospel or not. If you have not been taught the truth - you will not be judged for it. Plus, God will be the final judge - not one religion over another. I'm glad for that - I don't want to judge anybody - and I don't want anybody to judge me but Him.
Rest easy, there are many false teachings out there, and the intent of your heart and the knowledge you gain will be what is judged.

Bottom line is, God is so much more capable of judging mankind than what most of us give Him credit for.
Is God fair?
Is God just?
Does God have compassion?
I say yes to all these questions, and I trust that He will be able to judge all the nations fairly, justly and with compassion.
The BIG difference between Christians vs non-Christians, is that a Christians sins have been paid for by the blood of Jesus, where as a non-Christian will be held accountable for the payment of their own sins.
But if a person never heard of Jesus, they weren't expecting to be saved any way so they won't feel exactly cheated.

if you were ignorant about Christianity, then you wouldnt. . . God wont condemn you to hell because your circumstances didn't allow him to be revealed to you. You cant exactly say that just hearing the gospel and not converting right away is enough to be sent to hell, alot of people are taught from a very young age to hate Christians, they are basically indoctrinated from day 1, why should they suffer for what the people taking care of them did?

There are many religions and many gods, but only one Supreme Deity and all souls will eventually return to the Creator.
I very much doubt your "religion teacher" was stumped, as those who teach Christian groups (both Catholic and Protestant) teach from the Bible, advising those who do not accept Jesus as their savior will be cast into Hell.

And what of the infants, and retards, and foreigners, and those that lived before Christ, and what of the mute and blind and deaf, and animals, and etc, etc,
For God is not a respector of outward appearance, nor race, or color, or intellect, or age, or interpretaion, or even religion, or just about anything mundane except the intent of the heart, as with all time.

If u belive in ALLAH(THE ONE AND ONLY GOD) and obey HIM. Then you will go to Jannah(paradise) .ALL others will go to hell simply because the biggest crime in the eyes of ALLAH is praying or making any body equivallent to HIM.However the people who are good but dont obey or accept nALLAH will be rewarded in this universe because ALLAH says that HE do not do any thing which is not earned by that human by his deeds.
