Lead
Copper
Depleted uranium (for those who want real penetration)
WAX (called "simunition" for for live fire exercises)
Ice (for those who want to make forensics difficult)
Rock salt (for all the pain without the permanence)

Then there's good ole "Black Talon" - rounds which explode on contact.

Most rounds are hollow point so they stay inside the body, and fragment as they penetrate to do maximum damage.

If you've got a mold, you can make it out of just about anything that'll harden. You can make it out of frosting if you wanted to.

What Are Bullets Made Of

2016-11-03 10:47:13 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

A modern bullet is a composite of different materials, and usually consists of:

Projectile - The part of the bullet that is shot out and hits things. Can be made of virtually anything (even wood and wax), but the regular lethal sort are typically made of lead or steel coated in copper.

Casing - Houses and keeps everything together, ejected when the gun is fired. Usually made of brass.

Gunpowder or Cordite - Something like that.

Primer - When struck, this sets off the gunpowder and fires the bullet. Can be made of lots of things - lead/mercury compounds.

---

While the projectile that flies out and strikes people is usually made of or coated in a "safe" metal like copper or steel, there's a detritus of other substances that end up getting mixed in with it is fired and hits something - this is usually how lead poisoning from gunshots comes about.

A standard round for any weapon is made of a lead projectile (bullet) that is jacketed (covered) in copper. The lead is too soft to go through the air itself, and the copper pretty much holds it in shape. When the bullet strikes, it expands rapidly, or mushrooms. The actual bullet is housed ina casing of brass, which holds the primer and the gun powder. The primer is struck by the firing pin, and causes a small explosion, lighting off the gun powder.
Of course, there are also a TON of specialty rounds out there. Frangible rounds are made for firing at ranges, and are made of a ceramic. This is alot safer for the environment. But, there are steel, nickel, copper, and depleted uranium rounds out there for other purposes. And, to whoever said a "Black Talon" has explosives is full of crap. All they are is a hollow point with serated edges. I have a bunch of them, pre-ban.

The original Soviet M43 bullets are boat-tail bullets with a copper-plated steel jacket, a large steel core, and some lead between the core and the jacket. The cartridge itself consists of a berdan-primed, tapered (usually steel) case which seats the bullet and contains the powder charge. The taper makes it very easy to feed and extract the round, since there is little contact with the chamber walls until the round is fully seated. This taper is what causes the AK-47 to have distinctively curved magazines. While the bullet design itself has gone through a few redesigns, the cartridge itself remains largely unchanged.

Good question. Technically, the bullet is the projectile part of a cartrige. Bullets are almost always made from a core of lead. Many have a jacket of copper on them.

A cartridge contains a bullet, a brass casing (rarely the casing can be made from aluminum), a primer, which sparks an explosion, and gunpowder, which burns very rapidly when sparked by the primer's explosion. The gunpowder's burning produces a lot of gas which pushes the bullet out of the cartidge, down the barrel of the gun, and out.

Mostly lead. Military bullets have a copper jacket.

typical bullets are composed of several different things, usually a lead(or other metal) outer shell, inside it is gun powder and the butt has a firing pin that ignites the gun powder to propel the bullet out of the gun.

I've reloaded empty shells before but not for an AK 47

All bullets are pretty much made the same. The shell casing which contains the powder is made of brass and the actual projectile or sabot is usually made of copper-jacketed lead.

They are usually made of steel with a copper jacket. They haven't been made of lead for decades. The bullet for an AK-47 is a 7.62 x 39 mm. It is also steel covered in copper.

Mostly lead but they are changing to a new material because Lead is a toxic substance for the environment, I think the new material will be based on a Nickel and another combonation
