Simply, they were a expansionist religion...

"Say we are right or die"

for about 200 years and had more modern warfare technics and equipment...
Also, because of the "sheep"factor , the more say one thing, the more "sheeps" will follow.

Its easy to follow the crowd

Well, when it was convert or die, many chose conversion. And since those that chose to remain loyal to their ancestral religions were dead, there was no one to teach their children the old ways. Keep it going for a few generations and you have a pretty big religion.

In the beginning Christianity was able to spread due to the numerous Roman roads thru out the empire; also, due to the common Greek Koine language spoken in the empire. Also, there were miracles that were used at that time to establish Christianity.
Untold millions thru out its history attest to the life changing truths of Christianity.

The abuses and excesses of Christians are exception rather than the rule. The message of Christ is liberating. Reason people embrace it.
