The British set fire to the White house and Martha Washington saved a portrait of his husband, George Washington, which was the only thing saved. Then after the fire, the White House was completely painted white to hide the damage caused by the fire.

The city of Washington was attacked during the war of 1812. The President's mansion was burned leaving only the outside walls. when it was rebuilt, the exterior was painted white to cover the burn marks. That's how it got to be the White House.
It was 1st lady Dolly Madison who saved the famious portrait of Washington.
If you're asking about the very recient fire, that was at the execuitive office building next door. I read that it started in a closet near the vice president's office.

It was at the Eisenhower Executive Building right next door. It was contained to Dick Cheney's area, but was put out. No injuries were reported. Here's a link.
