Can lack of sleep lead to serious mental issues and cause serious phobias?

Absolutely. It unbalances you, physically and mentally. It makes it more difficult to deal with anything out of the ordinary. It makes it difficult to think. Get yourself back on a regular schedule and get your sleep. If necessary, get your doc to give you sleep aids for just a couple of nights to get back in a good pattern. Take your meds and vitamins at the same time every day. Get some exercise during the day and it's easier to sleep at night.

That is an interesting question. The more we learn about mental disorders in humans the more we find that some of them have a genetic basis. There are certainly genetic personality traits in dogs. Some breeds have been selectively bred for these traits; herding, guarding and hunting are all characteristics which are more developed in some breeds than others. But, true mental disorders are probably rare in dogs for two reasons. The brain of a dog is not as highly developed as a human's so there is less capacity for disorders to develop or be expressed overtly. Also, any dogs showing severe undesirable behaviour would usually be removed from the gene pool and not allowed to breed. We still have a lot of work to do unravelling the workings of the human mind. Understanding the possible physiological causes of mental disorders in dogs is a largely untapped area. Because of this all abnormal dog behaviour is still considered to be a training or environmental problem. There is recognition of senile dementia like symptoms in some ageing dogs, and there are now some drugs coming on the market to reduce the symptoms of this condition. It is likely that the treatment of some canine abnormal behaviours with drugs may become more common in future as our understanding of these problems develops.

"One example of how no sleep effects human behavior is a decrease in mental processing performance...studies have shown that a lack of sleep (less than 6 hours a night) can impair the brain as much as being under the influence of alcohol."
"Brain chemistry can be adversely impacted by a lack of sleep. Insomnia can even produce depression, anxiety and enhance the effects of stress if left unaddressed...Another example of how no sleep effects human behavior is through a reduction in reasoning capability and a lowering of inhibitions."
