Come, let us reason together.
First, God is the Creator of everything.
Second, God is not subject to His Creation.
Third, ALL of Creation is subject to God.
Now since God created the stars and they are subject to Him, He can allow their light, which He also created, to reach the earth instantly if He so chooses. So, the obvious answer is that God has changed the speed at which the light that He created travels through the vacuum of space and the speed of light (186,282.396 miles per second, measured in a vacuum using a laser beam) has not always been the speed that light travels because the Creation is subject to the Creator, not the other way around.
Isn't God awesome!

The time/light issue is an interesting aspect of the creation/evolution debate, but it should be noted that creationists are not the only ones who have to contend with it. Big Bang cosmology also has a starlight and time issue: it's called the Horizon Problem, and evolutionists have twisted themselves into some pretty tight cosmological knots trying to get around it.
For insight on a creationist perspective, I would recommend "Starlight and Time" by Russell Humphreys. It's about the best explanation I've seen from the perspective of a creation cosmology:

Any theory that tries to account for stars being created on the 4th day and after our sun, which is a star as well, has serious problems. Basically as the closest star is around 6 light years away, its light would have to move at one speed and the light from the farthest star would have to move at a massively faster one.

GOD DIDNT NEED THE LIGHT BEFORE THE SUN HE WAS THE LIGHT. GOD CREATED TIME SO WHEN HE SAID IT IS DONE AND IT IS GOOD. WHHOOOP THERE IT IS! IN THE HEBREW BIBLE WRITTEN IN HBREW A DAY MEANS YOM WHICH MEANS A LITERAL 24 HOUR DAY.
GOD WAS SETTING US UP OUR WEEK. DONTCHA GET IT. ASK GOD AND BE SERIOUS HE WILL LET YOU KNOW MAYBE NOT TODAY OR TOM. BUT MARK MY WORD , IF YOU ASK WITH RIGHT HEART HE WILL OPEN YOUR EYES. GOD BLESS.

Faith means God never has to explain anything...I find comfort in the grace and mercy of the things He did tell me...With all the theories does anyone know how long it took Jesus to get to Heaven from Earth?...How long did it take for God to decide to send Jesus to die for our sins?...

Why didn't the Bible inventors make "God" make light on the 1st day. It's really stupid that they made him work in the dark like a coal miner.

Now you are beginning to catch on. They took the real story from the Sumerian tablets and made up what they wanted.

There is no limit for God. He created them so therefore they appear and not travel.
