On a violin, what is the name of the part that connects the tailpiece to the end button, or end pin?

What is it made of and how long should it last? If you could tell me the name of the part in German it would be a big help.

Tail cord or tail gut or tail hanger. Either wire or synthetic like nylon. Some old ones may be of animal fiber.
