i have a rat living under my stable mats, they cost a lot of money and the rat is eating holes out of it, also eating the wood in the stable, would a ferret kill the rat like they do rabbits, or would the rat hurt the ferret? i need to get rid of this rat from hell, the cats are useless,

you said it is a hunting rat, so im guessing you aren't getting a pet ferret? lol good, because to just get a ferret for that purpose is wrong

anyway, ferrets are very good at hunting, when trained that is, because they have been domesicated for a long time, the hunting ferrets will take down the rat, the rat will just fear the ferret, ferrets can be very agressive animals, they were natural hunters once

if you still are uneasy about a ferret roaming about your stable because you fear that it will get hurt, not that it will, then you can try a local pest control to see what they can do, you can also set up traps to catch it, wether it be humane ones or the snap traps, i personally think the snapping onces are cruel, and you can release it far away with the humane one

A ferret will kill a rat, but you'd do better getting cats. You can't leave a ferret unattended -- it'll just wander off. A cat will stay in the barn.

If the cats aren't catching it, it may not even BE a rat.

I should say they can My great uncle breeds hunting ferrets and they are the most viscious animals (to other animals) but sweet as pie to humans, they will even attack his hunting dogs if they get too close, but they will cuddle with people all day. If they are bred hunters like you said, they should have no problems adapting very quickly, rats is their natural diet anyway.

Ferrets make great ratters.
At least they used to. I don't know whether the modern sissy ferrets have lost the power. But there must still be some ferrets that can hunt.

There's no pest control professionals in your area? Instead of getting a pet just to solve a pest problem (instead of the best reason to get a pet: a new companion for the family), hire someone to catch the rat and release it elsewhere.
